Chapter One

Preface

1.1 Background of the Study

In mortal life, education is a constant process. It’s the process of conducting, developing, and training people’s information, chops, capacities, minds, and character( Olaniyonu, 2008). Education is the process of people’ natural and idle eventuality being exercised and explored for their particular growth in particular and public development in general. The quality of their preceptors determines meaningful advances in the position of education that scholars get. As a result, high- quality tutoring and literacy are critical for scholars’ academic success( Anderson, 1991). For a country like Nigeria, where rapid-fire technological growth is a precedence, academic achievement in English is critical to achieving this end. All other disciplines are tutored in English, which is an essential tool for expression and communication. A number of scholars who have examined the part of language in the development of countries similar as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and others have supported for the use of English in the tutoring of critical subjects similar as Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, and other subjects in Nigerian secondary seminaries. This offer was proposed to address the problem of pupils’ poor academic performance in the elderly Secondary Certificate Examination( SSCE) over time. The position of professionalism of preceptors is one of the schoolteacher- variables that has a significant impact on pupils’ academic achievement. preceptors’ professionalism reflects their intellectual, social, and emotional stability, as well as their passion for their pupils, capability to inspire them, and positive approach about tutoring( Afe, 2003). The degree to which the educational objects are met is measured by the professionalism of the preceptors. It refers to a pupil’s net increase in intellectual capability and capacities as assessed by their academic achievement( Afe, 2003; Evans, 2006). The professionalism of preceptors is the single most important factor in pupils’ success. It outperforms other factors that have an impact on scholars’ performance, similar as class size, gender, and socioeconomic status. tutoring, which was formerly seen as a respectable vocation, has been taken over by hoaxers who warrant the necessary qualifications and moxie to instruct. Because of the high rate of severance in Nigeria, graduates without a background in education have been forced to educate in order to make a living. These inexperienced preceptors see tutoring as a expedient that they should abandon as soon as they get their ideal careers. good preceptors are those who have completed a minimum degree of education training for the subjects they educate( Olaniyonu, 2008). For illustration, because he didn’t acquire training in English education, an English graduate who teaches English Language is considered an unqualified educator. similar inexperienced and unskilled preceptors are strange with the complexity of tutoring, have little or no enthusiasm, and are unconcerned with their scholars’ literacy issues. The debate about Nigeria’s shy educational quality has raged for a decade and is still raging in the twenty-first century. High schoolteacher- pupil rates, a deficit of good and educated tutoring staff, poor educational leadership, political insecurity, politicization of educational programs, an unwelcome tutoring and literacy terrain, and shy educational installations have all been criticized for scholars’ poor academic performance( Evans, 2006; Ewetan, 2010). The harmonious provision of people and material coffers is one of the most important conditions for developing effective seminaries with great academic performance. In Nigeria, there are several countries where the rate of untrained preceptors in primary and secondary seminaries is as high as 80.( Daso, 2013). As a result, a large number of untrained preceptors in public secondary seminaries is a crucial contributor to pupils’ poor academic performance. The wrong issues of pupils in the elderly Secondary Council Examination( SSCE) in Nigeria over the times are a prominent index of this low performance. The poor performance of scholars in the SSCE is linked to a deterioration in tutoring and literacy quality. scholars’ grades are the most important sign of a schoolteacher’s effectiveness, effectiveness, faculty, and professionalism.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Academic performance of scholars in Nigeria particularly the scholars in the study area, on the normal has witnessed a dramatic decline in recent times. Ewetan( 2010) argues that the present- day secondary academy scholars, on the normal can no longer do what primary academy pupils used to do in those days academic-wise. Poor academic performance of scholars can be attributed to the dearth of trained, good, competent, educated and professional preceptors amongst other factors. It has been known that the qualifications and experience of preceptors have a favorable influence on pupils’ academic achievement. A schoolteacher’s experience is determined by the number of times he has spent in the classroom. It’s extensively assumed that preceptors with numerous times of experience will have gained lesser information to help their pupils achieve better academically. When preceptors have little or no tutoring experience, their efficacity and effectiveness in furnishing services to their scholars suffers, and as a result, their pupils’ academic achievement suffers as well. therefore, the need to probe the effect of preceptors ’ professionalism on scholars ’ academic performance.
