ASSESSMENT OF CAREER DEVELOPMENT OPTIONS FOR THE NIGERIAN GIRLS IN SPORT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

Sport, as a distinct sociocultural phenomenon, is a historically determined human activity associated with the use of physical exercises, with the goal of preparing for and participating in a specially organized system of competitions, as well as the individual and socially significant outcomes of such activity (Brassie, 2008).

Structured sports activities provide an opportunity to engage in competitive pursuits with economic value while also developing strong social connections with others. Active recreation offers a more unstructured physical activity space that people can use freely in their spare time to achieve a personal sense of enjoyment.

However, there are different levels of participation in sports, such as amateur, non-professional, and professional athletes, as well as recreational participants. The amateur athlete participates in a sport on a regular and direct basis.

Formal competition under the established rules of a sport’s governing body, but without any gratification or external rewards other than trophies, plagues, certificates, and so on. A non-professional athlete may need money to participate in a sport, but he or she may only use that money to cover living expenses and keep the rest in escrow until retirement (Fordham, & Leaf, 2008). The professional athlete and recreational participant participate in sport on an irregular or regular basis through informal organizations. Though such participation is common, the athlete does not belong to an association and does not compete in a way that would expose him or her to an institutionalized version of his or her sport of interest (Siedentop, 1994).

Women have played an important role in sports over the years. because they have their own world of sport and sporting activities, whether competitive or not. Aside from playing and coaching, women can be involved in sports in a variety of ways. With the highly institutionalized nature of sports today, a variety of roles exist that necessitate professionals in the sports industry. Because the athlete will be unable to participate in life’s sports, it is necessary to plan for her retirement (Parks, J. & Zanger, B. 2012). As a result, this paper focuses on career options for sports girls other than traditional teaching professionals after graduation. As a result, she would be free to pursue any of these options for a living. The opportunities for her to put her newly acquired skills to use

are one of the study’s primary concerns. As a result, this study evaluates the career options for Nigerian girls in the sporting sector.

1.2 Problem Identification

In Nigeria, female sports participants include amateurs, non-professionals, professionals, and recreational sports participants. However, because athletes are unable to perform in life due to physiological and physical limitations, she must have a way to earn a living in retirement in order to avoid falling into the category of poor people in the country. Furthermore, due to the highly institutionalized nature of sports today, a variety of job opportunities requiring professional expertise in the field of sports are being created.

have been discovered idle after retirement due to a lack of knowledge about what other sport or aspect of sport they should use their expertise and experience in (Fordham et. al. 2011). Female athletes can pursue a variety of careers, including sports administration, sports medicine, coaching, officiating, sports psychologists, sports sociology, sport journalism/broadcasting, sports marketing and photography, and groundsmanship, according to Siedentop (2004). As a result, the purpose of this research is to identify the career options available to all female athletes in Nigeria.

can put their newly acquired skills to good use. This study will be useful to parents and teachers as well, as it will help them guide a female child through her decision to pursue a sports career.

Furthermore, this study will be of great interest to the research community because it will add to the body of literature already available on this topic, making it useful to researchers, students, and other intellectuals.
