Challenges And Prospects Of E-learning At The National Open University Of Nigeria Abuja

Chapter One

Preface

Background Of The Study

The use of ICTs( Information and Communication Technology) to ameliorate and help the tutoring and literacy process is appertained to ase-learning. E-learning encompasses anything from how scholars use dispatch to how they pierce course material online while taking a class on lot to fully online programs. Advanced education has been converted by advances in ICT in numerous ways, including adding access topost-secondary education, perfecting the vacuity of educational coffers, easing meaningful commerce among learners, and contemporizing an outmoded educational system to more prepare scholars and the average citizen for the information age, as well as accelerating public development sweats. Information and communication technologies( ICTs) have had an influence on numerous aspects of society, including education.

The use of ICTs in the form ofe-learning is formerly transubstantiating tutoring and literacy processes in advanced education. Advanced education institutions have espousede-learning due to a variety of pedagogical and profitable variables. Increased information access; increased communication; coetaneous literacy; increased cooperation and collaboration; cost- effectiveness(e.g., by reaching a larger number of scholars); and pedagogical enhancement through simulations, virtual gests , and graphic representations are some of these. Both coaches and learners may pick more applicable operations that are more flexible in terms of time and position, customized, applicable, suited to particular disciplines, and cost-effective( Adomi, 2005; Fisser, 2001 Pelliccione, 2001 Olabode, Marlien, & Jacobs et al, 2005; Bruno, 2007). E-learning is the use of information and communication technology( ICT) to ameliorate and/ or help literacy in advanced education.

This, still, covers a wide range of systems, from scholars exercisinge-mail and penetrating course accoutrements online while taking a class on lot to fully online programs. Elearning may take numerous forms; for illustration, a lot- grounded university may give courses exercising Elearning that’s connected to the Internet or another online network( Lorrain et al, 2007). E-learning encompasses not just classroom training and tutoring, but also substantiated literacy. The expression” online literacy” has been defined using a variety of terms( Lorrain etal., 2007; Oye 2011).

Computers and ICT were first used in the classroom to round tutoring approaches. As further particular computers came accessible, several introducing seminaries and institutions began to probe and examine the notion and practice of online classrooms. E-learning is the use of information and communication technologies( ICTs) to ameliorate and help the tutoring and literacy process. It enables the effective transmission of information, anyhow of subject matter, anywhere and at any time, and opens up a world of learning preliminarily unattainable in utmost corridor of the globe. At the same time,e-learning provides learners with the knowledge and capacities in information technology that they need to flourish in moment’s global knowledge frugality.

Ajadi etal.( 2008) and Olaniyi( 2006), the most current kind ofe-learning used in Nigerian seminaries is in the form of lecture notes on CD- ROM, which may be played whenever the scholars choose. They stated that some universities have embraced the operation of Intranet installations, but that this isn’t effectively maintained due to power outages and the precious expenditure of maintaining creators. The maturity of Nigerian scholars use a cyber cafĂ© to pierce the Internet. Despite these and other obstacles, the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Benin, University of Abuja, University of Lagos, and the National Open University of Nigeria( NOUN), among others, havee-learning installations. This figure may feel low( in comparison to other regions of the globe and the value ofe-learning in profitable growth), but it’s due to the position of utmost institutions, bandwidth challenges, and, most importantly, the electrical force dilemma. Although utmost educational institutions( private and public) have begun to establish ICT centers just for Internet services, without considering the other factors of ane-learning center( Ajadi etal., 2008).

Statement Of The Problem

Advanced education has been converted by advances in ICT in numerous ways, including adding access topost-secondary education, perfecting the vacuity of educational coffers, easing meaningful commerce among learners, and contemporizing an outmoded educational system to more prepare scholars and the average citizen for the information age, as well as accelerating public development sweats. Information and communication technologies( ICTs) have had an influence on numerous aspects of society, including education.

Despite the fact that the contemporary period promotes the use ofe-learning installations to foster the education of individualities, it’s still over looked in certain seminaries. seminaries ignore thesee-learning styles and stick to archaic styles of conducting knowledge on scholars and as a result, graduates are limited in the world of fast growing technology as they weren’t exposed in their academy days ine-learning or any knowledge pertaining to the use of contemporary literacy styles.

Ideal Of The Study

The main purpose of this study is to assay the challenges and prospects ofe-learning at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja. therefore, the following objects;

1. To determine whether the scholars have knowledge on the use ofe-learning installations.

2. To determine whether the National Open University of Nigeria have enoughe-learning installations and outfit.

3. To determine whether the speakers also have knowledge on the use ofe-learning installations.

4. To determine the colorful challenges that face NOUN in usinge-learning installations.

Exploration Questions

These questions guide this study;

1. Do scholars really have knowledge on the use ofe-learning installations?

2. Does National Open University of Nigeria have enoughe-learning installations and accoutrements ?

3. Do speakers also have knowledge on the use ofe-learning installations?

4. What are the colorful challenges that face NOUN in usinge-learning installations?

Significance Of The Study

This study will be helpful to other experimenters who wish to broaden the compass of the exploration and conduct a study on another university. It’ll also be helpful to National Open University of Nigeria as it’ll give the necessary information pertaining to the use ofe-learning installations and the colorful challenges that face the proper perpetration ofe-learning in the university which will allow for the university to take the necessary conduct.

Compass Of The Study

This study will only cover the National Open University of Nigeria and the colorful challenges it faces in enforcing the use ofe-learning installations.

Limitation Of The Study

The only limitation the experimenter faced during the course of this study was inadequate time.

Description Of Terms
