ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF SCHOOL LOCATION ON STUDENTS EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the study

The implementation of Universal Primary Education in the 1970s, followed by the Primary Education Development Plan (PEDP) in 2002, resulted in a rapid increase in the number of secondary schools in Nigeria. As primary education (PE) has grown in popularity, a demand for post-PE has emerged, necessitating a sufficient supply of instructors and a suitable learning environment in schools as an added incentive to complete primary school. Secondary school site was not given prior critical thought in certain Nigerian locations in order to satisfy the requirement for access and completion of education. Anthony Joseph (2015). The establishment of schools did not take into account factors that may contribute to high-quality education and improved academic achievement, such as the travel distances of students and teachers to and from school.  Building more schools closer to people has been a significant step toward universalizing education because all eligible children would be able to attend school and participate in all scheduled activities. Secondary schools are located all over the world, often far from the students’ homes. As a result, the increased walking or transportation distance from home to school/college has had a negative impact on schoolchildren, particularly females. Furthermore, a study on the impact of travel distance on educational quality among students in community schools discovered that the majority of students arrived late, tired, and uninterested in learning, resulting in low academic achievement. Access to high-quality information Education is required for the development of an engaged workforce that will contribute to economic growth.

performance, jeopardizing national efforts to train and employ qualified individuals.

1.3 Research Objectives

The following is the study’s primary goal:

l To investigate the extent to which school location influences academic achievement of Nigerian students.

l To discover the factors that influenced the location of community schools in Nigeria.

l To identify the criteria used to assign students to schools, as well as appropriate strategies for improving secondary school students’ performance.

1.3 Research concerns

1. Does the location of a school affect the academic performance of students in Nigeria?

2. Are there factors that influence the location of a community school in Nigeria?

3. Do you believe the criteria used to assign students to schools are appropriate?

4. Do you believe there is room for improvement in

performance of students in school

1.4 Importance of the research

This study provides data to planners, policymakers, teachers, and parents.

The importance of appropriate location of community schools on learners’ academic performance has been discussed by community members and academia. As a result, findings are

appropriate for future planning and practice in the construction of new secondary schools on

proper strategies to institute better learning environment. Furthermore, as long as school is in session

The findings indicate that learners’ academic performance is likely to be affected by their location.

new opportunities for future studies in various community secondary schools

1.5 The scope of the research

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of school location on students’ academic performance. As a result, this study is restricted to a few secondary schools in the Akwanga local government area of Nassarawa state.

1.6 Restrictions of The Study

A number of factors hampered this study, which are as follows:

Given the current economic conditions, financial constraints are unavoidable. Due to a lack of funds at the researchers’ disposal to obtain materials and print questionnaires. It was not possible to visit some of the communities that had been ravaged by banditry.

In developing countries such as Nigeria, there is a data shortage.

Time constraint: Another constraint is time, which makes it difficult for the researcher to shuttle between writing the research and engaging in other academic work.
