DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A COMPUTER BASED WAREHOUSING INFORMATION SYSTEM

CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

A warehouse is a location where items and commodities are stored awaiting subsequent clearance. Narrowing it down to the Nigeria Ports Authority, there are numerous warehouses where imported cargo and merchandise are held. This is cleared by dragging the billing papers from post to post, waiting, and wasting a lot of time trying to figure out who is in charge. It takes around two weeks to clear goods that take about two weeks to berth into the nation. This causes importers and clearance agents to rush from port to port in quest of the location of the products.

The use of computers in warehousing will allow importers to know which and where their goods are stored, as specified on the bill of lading papers. The computer is viewed as a method of handling by systematically organizing things, documenting or making notations on them, and then following up with the required action or the like.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

The manual processing of billing documents for goods clearance has resulted in the omission of several records that should have been included. This is due to the manual billing process’s inaccuracy.

Due to inefficiencies in the manual billing procedure, billing documents are transported from post to post, waiting for who is in control, causing the goods that are supposed to be delivered to be delayed.

Furthermore, things are not delivered on time since goods that take around two weeks to enter the nation take another two weeks to clear.

1.3 STUDY PURPOSE

The goal of this research is to

1. Determine the issues caused by manual billing clearance.

2. Investigating the impact of this in the Nigeria Ports Authority

3. Develop computer awareness

4. Identify potential solutions to challenges.

1.4 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

This research, based on the difficulty and potential of employing computers in the Nigeria Ports Authority, would aid in the development of computer interest.

The outcomes of this study would also assist management in increasing the income production of the Nigeria Ports Authority and the overall smooth operation of the warehouse.

1.5 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The researcher will identify all of the challenges encountered with the usage of manual billing clearance in warehousing, including the financial restrictions of the problems.

1.6 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

Due to funding constraints and a lack of time, the researcher is focusing the investigation just on Nigeria Ports Authority Lagos.
