DOMESTIC ARCHITECTURE

Abstract

People’s cultures determine and shape the domestic space in their domestic architecture. Subsequent revisions of the concept have concentrated on more precise revelations of how the spatial arrangements of material culture are culturally patterned. This study detects a transformation in the house-type aspired and developed by people over the last five centuries using a topological analysis of house plans and patterns collected from the City of Benin. A total of 1054 houses in four residential zones in Benin City, Nigeria, were studied using frequency distribution, Space Syntax categories, and factor analysis.
The study aims to discover how the use, organization, and meaning of space in Benin have changed over time and whether there are any continuities. Years have passed throughout the entire City. The Space Syntax method is used to assess the degree of change at each stage of evolution. The main idea here is the â€space-activity†interaction, which allows us to see what lies beneath the process. The recombination of activities occurs as the old spaces take on new names and functions in the new design, and when this occurs repeatedly at each stage, it leaves behind â€topological paths†from which the evolution can be measured. Further investigation reveals that the space-activity interaction occurs both at each partitioned space and at the closely related collective space. The factor analysis of the residents’ attitudes and responses revealed that both socioeconomic and Change and continuity in the domestic space are caused by socio-cultural factors.
