Elite Politicization Of Terror: Implication On Nigeria

Chapter One

Preface

Background of the study

Without a mistrustfulness, Nigeria, as an artificial creation performing from the admixture of different ethnical ethnicities by British colonialists in 1914, has faced serious challenges in getting a stable polity where equity, concinnity, fairness, and justice will characterize the connections between the distant groups. Several studies and scholars, including Ekeh( 1975), Nnoli( 1978), and Ayoade( 2010), as cited in ChijiokeE. & MichaelI.( 2017), have proved how the politicization of race, manipulation of early sentiments, and other negative tendencies were exploited by colorful vested interests, particularly during social rule and the immediatepost-colonial period. specially, a common thread running across utmost of these studies is that the negative inclinations of marginalization and rejection by one group against the other, which were constantly exploited, aggravated the issue of a lack of legitimating values that has agonized Nigeria from its commencement. Violence has been used as a armament in manipulating and politicizing these negative tendencies of marginalization and rejection, most lately in the forms of insurrection, bellicosity, and terrorism.

previous to independence, Nigerian violence was substantially ethnical and religious in nature, manipulated by elites. After 1960, some violence began to have a political undertone, leading to words like ethno- political violence. The violence that erupted in the fate of the dissolution of the presidential election in 1993 was markedly ethno- political. still, being ethno- political implies that ethnical emotion is a primary source of violence in Nigeria, and as similar, virtually every political or religious violence is frequently associated with ethnocentrism. occasionally, particularly in the Northern area, violence is the consequence of a triad of ethnical, religious, and political factors. Adetunmbi,O.( 2014), as substantiated in Chijioke,E., and MichaelI.( 2017).

In the north, ethnoreligious violence is frequently more severe than politically driven violence. Since the resumption of mercenary popular governance in Nigeria in 1999, instability and violence have been a significant issue.

In present- day Nigeria, there’s inarguable instability as a result of social exploitation of primitive ethnical passions. The Nigerian state’s incapability to construct a system that assures justice, fairness, and addition, along with the politicization of terror, creates a rich atmosphere for violence. The Niger Delta bellicosity is a result of these feelings of marginalization and rejection from a participated public wealth that has been situated in their vicinity. The conception of being a nonage and being minimally represented in political conditioning has come exorbitantly politicized, and violence has been used as a strategy. The Boko Haram insurrection sprang from the same dangerous political feelings as a consequence of a misconception among certain Northern senior who believe they’ve been out- plotted politically in terms of enjoying and managing the state earnings from Niger Delta oil painting. Terrible butcheries and violence were used as a political instrument to reclaim control of the North. As a result, this exploration is designed to probe Elite Politicization of Terror and its counteraccusations for Nigerian society.

Statement of Problem

Nigeria seems to be at a crossroads, with serious dubieties about which direction to take. This dilemma is exacerbated by the country’s repeated injuries since 1960. The two accomplishments of 1966, the pogrom and civil war from 1967 to 1970, the posterior accomplishments, the dissolution of the 1993 presidential election, and a slew of other heinous political developments have been interpreted negatively by one ethnical group as a ploy by the other group( s) to marginalize, subdue, suppress, and dominate the rest of the country. Unfortunately, no bone can argue that these ill- passions are unjustified since in Nigeria, violence is a commodity traded between and among ethnical groups and is supported by politicians ChijiokeE. & MichaelI.( 2017).

As a result, these sentiments are too deeply hardwired, and the pinch of this instability is fueled by the ruling nobility and, at worst, used as political propaganda, so the dividing lines are too strong, cutting across religion, race, ethnical, and political spheres, but it appears that Nigeria won’t crop from this ocean anytime soon. disharmony between and among Nigeria’s ethnical nations is a factor that generates mistrust, dogmatism, feelings of dread, and submission, all of which lead to violence at the lowest provocation. The situation in Nigeria is like a cask of gun greasepaint ready to be exploded by the lowest spark of light. This degree of poverty is expanding on a diurnal base, while the current administration shows ample substantiation of ineptness, inefficacy, and irresponsibility. Without equivocation, Nigeria’s future is bleak and fraught with query.

thus it’s against the background that this study is set to examine, elite politicization of terror recrimination on Nigeria.
