Abstract

This study was carried out to environmental pollution and it’s associated health threat among residers of Nkpor, Idemili North, Original Government Area of Anambra State. Specifically, the study examined the knowledge of environmental Pollution among residers of Nkpor, Idemili North, Original Government Area of Anambra State, assessed the perception of environmental Pollution among residers of Nkpor, Idemili North, Original Government Area of Anambra State and, determined the associated health pitfalls of environmental pollution among residers of Nkpor, Idemili North, Original Government Area of Anambra State. The study employed the check descriptive exploration design. A aggregate of 259 responses were validated from the check. The study espoused the proposition of ecological perspective of change and development by Wilkinson And Boulding( 1973). From the responses attained and analysed, the findings revealed that utmost residers of Nkpor, Idemili North, Original Government Area of Anambra State are knowledgeable about environmental pollution. likewise, the findings revealed that associated health pitfalls of environmental pollution among residers of Nkpor, Idemili North, Original Government Area of Anambra State include respiratory infections, heart conditions, cancers and central nervous system dysfunction. The study recommends that environmental education should be elevated in the academy class from primary to tertiary institutions to inculcate in the millions environmental friendly stations. similar environmental education should inversely be carried out through the traditional media so as to carry along both the knowledgeable and illiterate bones in the hunt for a healthy terrain.

Chapter One

Preface

Background Of The Study

It has been observed in recent times that the part the terrain play to a nation ‟ s development process can’t be relegated to the background. piecemeal from being the physical girding for natural territories, the terrain give the base for mortal exploits for agrarian, artificial, marketable, technological and tourism development of a society( Gbehe, 2004). For this and several other reasons, environmental issues now enthrall a centre stage in academic converse and other public fora both at the public and transnational situations. Recorded substantiation has also shown that the terrain represents a wide range of the external circumstances, conditions and the effects that affect the actuality and development of an individual, organism, group( Isaichei 1999) and/ or society. In Nigeria for case, environmental issues didn’t gain sanctioned elevation until the 1988 Koko poisonous waste jilting saga which also brought to the fore the clamant need to establish the Nigeria Federal Environmental Protection Agency( FEPA), Federal Ministry of Environment and other applicable agencies, presumably to attack environmentally affiliated issues, in the country. These include issues similar as environmental pollution, sanitation, reduction of ozone subcaste, desertification, flooding, corrosion, poverty, backcountry burning, deforestation, soil conservation etc. All these mentioned over are a pointer to the fact that issues of terrain and infact environmental pollution which forms the base of this paper has taken a centre stage in the nation ‟ s( Nigeria ‟ s) development process( Gbehe, 2004).

Environmentally inclined scholars Ocheri( 2003174), Gbehe( 2004), and Aja( 2005114)

have associated environmental pollution with mortal conditioning and albeit patient mortal commerce with the terrain. Research has also shown that as the population of a country grows increases with attendant pressure on the terrain especially in the wake of bettered technologies, environmental abuse and pollution is nonetheless heightened with corresponding goods on lives of people and other living organisms,( Ocheri, 2003) and( Hauses, 1971). It has been observed further that man through artificial, agrarian and the ever adding urbanization process, security and terrorist conditioning tend to directly and/ or laterally contaminate the terrain. Jande( 2005) and Aja( 2005) in their separate compliances, also in tandem with the anteceding agree that unrestricted use of fungicides, germicides, dressings and magpie jilting of garbage, excreta and beast soil as well as spillages from refineries, large scale backcountry burning etc are perceived as some of the leading factors of environmental pollution in Nigeria.

Environmental pollution takes place when the terrain can not reuse and neutralize dangerous by- products of mortal conditioning in due course without any structural or functional damage to its system. Pollution occurs when the natural terrain is unfit to putrefy the generated rudiments and on the other hand, when man fail to putrefy these adulterants instinctively. This has negative impacts on pivotal environmental services similar as provision of clean water, air and pastoralist land without which life on earth as we know it would be delicate( Gbehe, 2004).

Environmental pollution is a problem both in developed and developing countries. Factors similar as population growth and urbanization always place lesser demands on the terrain and stretch the use of natural coffers to the outside. similar overuse of natural coffers frequently results in nature ‟ s declination.

mortal terrain is made up of the following aspects The physical, social, profitable, political and technological. The physical terrain consists of air, land and water; the social terrain consists of the connections being among them; the technological terrain consists of gests and practices needed for constant adaption and survival; while the political terrain is defined by the degree of authority exercised by some over others. Despite the major sweats that have been made over recent times to clean up the terrain, pollution remains a major problem and poses continuing pitfalls to health. According to Hagget,( 1975), the problems are really topmost in the developing world, where traditional sources of pollution similar as artificial emigrations, poor sanitation, shy waste operation, polluted water inventories and exposures to inner air pollution from biomass energies affect large figures of people. Indeed in developed countries, still, environmental pollution persists, utmost especially amongst poorer sectors of society. In recent decades, too, a wide range of ultramodern adulterants have surfaced — not least, those associated with road business and the use of ultramodern chemicals in the home, in food, for water treatment and for pest control. utmost of these adulterants are infrequently present in exorbitantly large attention, so goods on health are generally far from immediate or egregious. The relations between humans and their physical surroundings have been considerably studied, as multiple mortal conditioning impact the terrain. The terrain is a coupling of the biotic( living organisms and microorganisms) and the abiotic( hydrosphere, lithosphere, and atmosphere)( Hagget, 1975).

Pollution is defined as the preface into the terrain of substances dangerous to humans and other living organisms. Adulterants are dangerous solids, liquids, or feasts produced in advanced than usual attention that reduce the quality of our terrain. mortal conditioning have an adverse effect on the terrain by contaminating the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the soil in which shops grow. Although the artificial revolution was a great success in terms of technology, society, and the provision of multiple services, it also introduced the product of huge amounts of adulterants emitted into the air that are dangerous to mortal health. Without any mistrustfulness, the global environmental pollution is considered an transnational public health issue with multiple angles. Social, profitable, and legislative enterprises and life habits are related to this major problem. easily, urbanization and industrialization are reaching unknown and disturbing proportions worldwide in our period. Anthropogenic air pollution is one of the biggest public health hazards worldwide, given that it accounts for about 9 million deaths per time( Inyang, 1978).

Without a mistrustfulness, all of the forenamed are nearly associated with climate change, and in the event of peril, the consequences can be severe for humanity( Vincent 2011). Climate changes and the goods of global planetary warming seriously affect multiple ecosystems, causing problems similar as food safety issues, ice and icicle melting, beast extermination, and damage to shops

Statement Of The Problem

Inyang,( 1978) points out that one of our period’s topmost scourges is environmental pollution, on account not only of its impact on climate change but also its impact on public and individual health due to adding morbidity and mortality. There are numerous adulterants that are major factors in complaint in humans. Among them, Particulate Matter( PM), patches of variable but veritably small periphery, access the respiratory system via inhalation, causing respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, reproductive and central nervous system dysfunctions, and cancer( Hagget, 1975). Despite the fact that ozone in the stratosphere plays a defensive part against ultraviolet irradiation, it’s dangerous when in high attention at ground position, also affecting the respiratory and cardiovascular system. likewise, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, unpredictable Organic composites( VOCs), dioxins, and polycyclic sweet hydrocarbons( PAHs) are each considered air adulterants that are dangerous to humans. Carbon monoxide can indeed provoke direct poisoning when breathed in at high situations. Heavy essence similar as lead, when absorbed into the mortal body, can lead to direct poisoning or habitual intoxication, depending on exposure. conditions being from the forenamed substances include basically respiratory problems similar as habitual Obstructive Pulmonary Disease( COPD), asthma, bronchiolitis, and also lung cancer, cardiovascular events, central nervous system dysfunctions, and cutaneous conditions( Ayia, 2009). Last but not least, climate change performing from environmental pollution affects the geographical distribution of numerous contagious conditions, as do natural disasters. The only way to attack this problem is through public mindfulness coupled with a multidisciplinary approach by scientific experts; public and transnational associations must address the emergence of this trouble and propose sustainable results.
