Evaluation Of The Level Of Newspaper Readership Among Career Women In Abuja

Chapter One

Preface

Background of the study

It’s common knowledge that the most effective way to promote mindfulness is through the media, where useful information may be conveyed to thousands of people in a certain area from a dependable source. In other words, journals, radio, TV, magazines, bills, flyers circulars, billboards, the internet, and other forms of mass media are employed to inform, communicate, and educate( among other effects) as change agents in every culture.

journals are a type of mass media that distributes current information at regular intervals. journals are salutary for education, information, enjoyment, relaxation, and entertainment as a mass media. This explains why journals are pivotal, according to Ola and Ojo( 2007), since they convey current information and keep compendiums apprehensive of events and conditioning both inside and outside their immediate environs. Okunna( 1999) backs up this claim by stating that journals are pivotal since they give as a source of current information or news. Obaid( 2014) agrees that journals are handbooks that give up- to- date information on original, state, public, and transnational affairs, as well as the most over- to- date analysis and review of superintendent and legislative decision- timber, as well as the rearmost in music, theater, TV, fine trades, and indeed columns and comics to make compendiums laugh. According to Babalola( 2002), journals aid knowledge commission by encouraging critical thinking, knowledge retention, problem working, and information source questioning. likewise, review reading allows one to develop communal-conscious ideals, forbearance, and a sense of community( Igwe, 2011), making it an important element for career women.

A career woman is a word that refers to a woman whose primary ideal in life is to establish a profession for herself( MichelleO. 2017). When the word was firstly used in the United States in the 1930s, it was used to distinguish between women who either worked at home or outside the home in low- pay envelope occupations as a matter of profitable necessity vs women who wanted to and were suitable to pursue employment as professions. Jobs in professional or business vocations with openings for invention, advancement, and organizational skill were the result. Women who” wish to work not simply to support their families, but for a measure of particular profitable independence, or as a derivate of escaping from dull country life, or simply for the conviviality of working with other women,” for illustration, could still be considered” career women” because of their pretensions( FrankS. 2012).

As a result, reading journals can give helpful information to professional women, similar as university admissions, jobs, and government special impulses that are salutary to them. This is due to the fact that reading is at the center of literacy, particularly in formal training settings for those in the informal sector, similar as working- class women. Reading broadens one’s knowledge and perspective on a content as well as society as a whole. Reading has four objects, according to Onwubiko( 2015) reading for pleasure and relaxation, reading for information, reading for knowledge, and reading for all of the below. He goes on to say that a anthology has access to a variety of coffers, including journals, which is one of the most common reading accoutrements . Elmadwi( 2014) set up that among all mass communication channels, reading review papers is largely advised for individualities since they may enjoy a range of reading and visual coffers that will increase literacy.

Statement of the problem

There’s little mistrustfulness that the traditional review is passing its most delicate period in history as a result of the internet’s appearance. The internet offers online capabilities and openings that go much beyond what a traditional review could supply. For illustration, the internet enables quick and low- cost access to news and information with interactive and multimedia capabilities, as well as easy access via fairly introductory movable technology similar as mobile phones and particular computers. According to Varian( 2013), the internet is a superior means of propagating and reading news and information.

Despite the significance of review reading in scholars’ lives, data from a broad body of empirical literature suggests that teenagers’ review reading is dropping. Dominick( 2002,p. 14) countries, for illustration, that review reading has been dropping in recent times. Udie( 2002,p. 100) also claims that just around half of Nigerian scholars read journals. According to Biagi( 2003), the overall volume of journals has dropped since the 1970s owing tonon-readership. According to Rajendran and Thesinghraja( 2014), new media and social media have presented a trouble to the published review. Readership patterns appear to be shifting, according to them, as individualities flock to the internet for free news and information. One of the clever possibilities for guests to embrace it internationally was the immediate aspect of social media and internet news.

This situation unwittingly affects established forms of mass communication, similar as journals, in their traditional fort of the news assiduity, pushing them to tap into the vast coffers of the internet. It’s also egregious that followership review reading habits impact whether or not the traditional review sector survives in Nigeria and numerous other nations. In this environment, the thing of this study was to learn further about review readership among Abuja’s working women.
