EXAMINATION OF SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT AND ITS IMPACT ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC ATTAINMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The relationship between the social environment and student academic achievement is one of the most frequently debated topics in the learning environment. The social environment refers to the immediate physical and social surroundings in which people live or in which something occurs or develops (Ngwoke, 2005).

Our family is, of course, our first school for social learning. From there, we learn how to feel about ourselves and how others react to our feelings, how to think about our thoughts and the different ways we can respond to them, and how to read and communicate our hopes and anxieties. This social learning occurs not only as a result of what parents say and do to their children, but also as a result of the models they provide for dealing with their own emotions.

as well as those that exist between husband and wife (Bhattacharya, 2016). As a result, it is critical for parents to develop self-awareness of their own emotions and sentiments in order to pass that knowledge on to their children. The more parents understand their own emotions, the better they will be able to control their child’s emotional personality.

Adolescents are influenced either positively or negatively by their parents’ emotional competence or incompetence. Many studies have found that children raised in a loving, caring, secure, consistent, and stable social environment have a better chance of social, mental, physical, emotional, and moral development (Harlock B. Elizabeth, 2014). During adolescence, people begin to develop a sense of self, strive for more mature interactions with friends and family, and strive for greater independence (Bhatia & Bhatia, 2008).

Depression, anxiety, self-esteem, delinquency, social competence, drug and alcohol involvement, achievement motivation, and academic achievement have all been shown to be influenced by a supportive relationship with family members in adolescents. 2005 (Mohanraj)

The social environment is an extremely effective informal learning context in which the family, especially the parents, serves as an educator. According to (Sharma & Vaid, 2005), the family is a place where a variety of human experiences occur. What parents do at home is also important for children’s learning development, according to (Youniss & Smollar, 2005). It goes without saying that a lack of encouragement, a lack of parental participation, and a lack of stimulating activities in the home will limit the child’s potential.

The effectiveness of the home as a learning environment. According to (Feldman & Wentzel, 2000), the home environment has a stronger relationship with overall cognitive development. Several studies have found correlations between the social environment and academic success (McCullough, Ashbridge, & Pegg, 2004). Children who grow up in a pleasant social environment and with positive attitudes have a better chance of succeeding academically. Parents’ relationships with their own children, as well as their feelings or reactions to their children’s training, differ.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

Every effective academic environment should have a more positive social environment. However, when it comes to students’ way of life, peer group associations, and desire to attend, most government-owned schools in Abia State do not have a good social environment.

classes. Nchube (2015) asserts that these can have a significant impact on their academic performance, particularly during examinations or student performance assessments. In contrast, while there have been numerous studies on academic achievement and the learning environment, not a single study has attempted to specifically link the social environment and pupil academic performance. In this regard, the researcher would like to look into the relationship between the social environment and students’ academic performance in Abia State secondary schools as a case study.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The primary goal of the research is to investigate the social environment and how it affects students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Abia State. Other specific study objectives include:

i. To identify the various types of learning environments that influence the requirements for

Secondary school teaching and learning that works

ii. Determine whether the social social environment influences student cognitive and affective behavior in the classroom.

iii. To identify social environment factors that influence students’ academic achievement in secondary school.

iv. To determine whether the social environment influences student academic performance in secondary schools.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The study developed research questions in order to determine the study’s stated objectives. The study’s research questions are as follows:

i. What are the different types of learning environments that are needed for effective teaching and learning in secondary schools?

ii. Does the social social environment influence students’ cognitive and affective behavior in the classroom?

iii. What social environment factors influence students’ performance?

performance in secondary school classroom assessment?

iv. Does the social environment have a significant impact on secondary school student academic performance?

1.5 THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The study on social environment and students’ academic performance will be extremely beneficial to all secondary schools in River State because it will examine the social environment and then relate it to secondary school students’ academic performance. The study will serve as a repository of information for other researchers who wish to conduct research on the aforementioned topic. Finally, the study will add to the body of existing literature and knowledge in this field of study and serve as a foundation for future research.

1.6 STUDY OBJECTIVES

The scope of this research

It has a social impact on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Abia State. The study on the social environment and students’ academic performance will concentrate on five (5) secondary schools in Abia State’s Obingwa local government area.

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

The researchers encountered minor constraints while conducting the study, as with any human endeavor. The significant constraint was the scarcity of literature on the subject due to the fact that it is a new discourse, so the researcher incurred more financial expenses and spent more time sourcing for relevant materials, literature, or information and in the data collection process, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited sample size covering only senior secondary school in secondary school.

Obingwa local government area in Abia State has a school. As a result, the findings of this study cannot be generalized to other secondary schools in other Nigerian states. Furthermore, the researcher’s involvement in this study while also working on other academic projects will impede maximum dedication to the research. Nonetheless, despite the constraints encountered during the research, all factors were minimized in order to provide the best results and make the research a success.

1.8 TERM DEFINITION

Human social environments include the immediate physical surroundings, social relationships, and cultural milieus in which defined groups of people operate and interact.

Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge through study, practice, or instruction in a school setting. It results in the acquisition of knowledge, which leads to change.

Learning causes a persistent, measurable, and specified change in behavior or allows an individual to formulate a new mental construct by acquiring knowledge, skills, and values through study and experience.

School Environment: This includes the school compound itself, the classroom, furniture, and teaching materials, as well as the time spent in the school compound in hours. It also incorporates the school’s surroundings. A safe, clean, comfortable, and appealing classroom can stimulate learning and aid in the formation of a classroom community.

To instruct individuals or groups within a school compound in any way. It is also a conscious and deliberate effort made by a mature or experienced person with the intent that the latter will learn or come to understand.

to believe what he is taught on sound grounds.

Performance is the completion of a given task as measured against known preset standards of accuracy, completeness, cost, and speed.

A student is a person who is formally engaged in learning, particularly one who is enrolled in a school or college.
