CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A biometric system is essentially a pattern recognition system that works by collecting biometric data from a person, extracting a feature vector from the data, and comparing it to a database feature vector. In computer vision, person authentication has always been a desirable goal. Biometrics systems are authentication methods based on human traits such as the face, finger, iris, and voice. Every biometric system starts with an input image and generates significant feature vectors such as color, texture, and so on. Biometric recognition is now a frequent and reliable method of verifying a living person’s identity based on physiological or behavioral traits. A physiological characteristic is a set of physical traits that are relatively stable, such as a fingerprint, an iris pattern, a face feature, a hand profile, and so on. Without substantial duress, this type of assessment is virtually unchangeable and unalterable. As a signature, speech pattern, or how one types at a keyboard, a behavioral feature is more a reflection of an individual’s psychological makeup.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

In recent years, the banking sector has seen an increase in cash card fraud, which has resulted in the illicit withdrawal of funds from consumer accounts, in accordance with global trends. Because the account holder is usually held liable for the loss of funds from their accounts, the consequences of this scam could be far-reaching. As a result, the banking industry must embrace biometrics as a solution to the growing problem of fake ATM cards and identity theft. Among the others are

1. Skimmers, or fake card readers, are placed over the genuine reader to send numbers and codes to surrounding thieves.

2. Password voyeurs obtain access codes with the use of spy cameras.

3. In the event that a card is misplaced,

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The goal of this project is to create a model of an embedded fingerprint authentication system that may be used in ATM security applications. The following are the precise goals:

I. To develop a platform that will allow bankers to gather fingerprints from customers.

II. To develop a platform that would allow bankers to gather and store consumer phone numbers in a consolidated database.

III. Create a system that sends a four-digit number to the customer’s mobile phone when the finger print readings match.

IV. To provide a platform that enables the customer to complete his transaction once the system has accepted the code generated.

V. To develop a platform that can evaluate biometric data in the context of global image analysis.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Due to an increase in hacking events, the current system of passwords and pin numbers required to access financial services has come under fire. Hackers have access to the system and are using the compromised data to withdraw funds from the victims’ accounts. This is where Biometrics comes in, with its flawless system. The following are some of the reasons for constructing this system:

vImprove security – Add a low-cost, handy extra layer of security.

vUse hard-to-forge technology and materials to reduce fraud. Minimize the risk of ATM fraud, for example.

vBy utilizing physiological features, you may eliminate difficulties caused by lost ATMs or forgotten passwords. For example, prevent unauthorized use of ATM cards that have been lost, stolen, or “borrowed.”

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this research is to use finger prints to implement ATM security. Customers’ personal and biometric data are stored in a centralized database. The system is meant to query the database by inputting a user fingerprint, which, if it matches one in the system, generates a four-digit number that allows the user to continue with his operations.
