Chapter One

Preface

Background to the Study

Leadership and cult are collective conditioning of great influence to public development in all corridor of the world. In Nigeria, after her independence in 1960, Nigeria moved from Administrative system of government to Presidential system of government, she has endured both mercenary and military administrations yet, her leaders have been unfit to deliver to her citizens the quality of life commensurable with her multitudinous endowed coffers. In Nigeria, government has failed to give movable drinking water, electricity, good roads, effective service delivery, employment, casing scheme, quality health care, quality education, believable electoral systemetc.

According to Ngwube( 2010), the trouble with Nigeria is simply and exactly a failure of leadership. There’s the incapability of Nigerian leaders to rise to the challenge of particular illustration which according to Achebe( 2001), is the hallmark of true leadership. In fairness to Achebe, our leaders haven’t led by illustration. Ngwube affirmed that, sycophancy; and bare oratories haven’t helped the situation but have rather compounded it. The quality and imagination of a country’s leadership can make or mar a country’s development or growth.

Leadership can decisively impact the quality of life of her people and her public power vis- à- vis annihilating them through war and poor governance( Irikana, 2012). The perception of the followers of their leaders in Nigeria is an issue of great significance. In utmost cases the followers hold the view that their leaders lacks the skill needed for governance, and that the leaders act not in agreement with the requirements and bournes of the people but in agreement with their particular docket or interests not unconnected with imperialistic forces.

cult in Nigeria has not generated important debate. But there have been cases of resistance movements that have been commanded by followers. These resistance cases are kick against poor governance and incompetency of Nigerian Leaders( Irikana, 2012). Nigerian followers are veritably pious and probative to leadership and have shared laboriously in the achievement of the nation’s pretensions. Though when a people are destroyed by poverty, it’ll weaken their capability to rise up to their challenges of discomfiting the surpluses of their leaders. This acquiescence will have a great negative impact on Leader- cult relationship.

Leaders that are discomfited by their followers will limit their surpluses and realign themselves to public opinion. But in the midst of acquiescence and sycophancy, leaders will be getting down with their misappropriations and incompetency. But competition among elites seeking leadership status can be a major source of conflict and check on leadership( Lawal, 2011). Leadership can be conceived both from the macro and micro position. Macro position refers to societal governance; while micro refers to group or organizational governance. This exploration will be agitating Leadership at the macro position which encapsulates the ultimate. It’ll look into the conception of leadership, types, rates, functions and problems of leadership from the Nigerian perspective. The study is aimed at enlightening political leaders and their followers of their liabilities in promoting good governance in Nigeria.
