Background To Study

Encyclopedically, domestic violence is a significant problem and one of the most pervasive mortal rights challenges especially for the most corridor of African societies where issues relating to mates violence are largely treated as hidden marvels( Izugbara etal., 2008).

While some intimate connections can be enjoyable and fulfilling, others may be characterized by combative and coercive behaviours including physical, sexual, cerebral attacks, and profitable compulsion which are dangerous to the existent’s physical and emotional good( Domestic Violence Data, 2007; Adebayo and Kolawole, 2013).

In utmost cases, domestic violence consists of individualities who are wedded, cohabiting or as same coitus couples( UNICEF, 2006). Despite the frequence of under- reported cases of domestic violence affirmed in former studies( Durose etal., 2005; Saidi etal., 2008; Olabode and Abayomi, 2013; Adebayo and Kolawole, 2013), a global report linked one in every five women to have been brazened with one form of violent attack( WHO, 2005). In Nigeria, over 65 per cent of educated women and 55 per cent of low income women are subordinated to domestic violence( Abayomi, 2013). More importantly, studies have set up that people who witness posterior domestic violence frequently suffer from pressure, guilt, anxiety, despair or from what sociologists describes as ‘‘ cradle of violence ’’( Gelles and Straus, 1988) or a ‘‘ haven in a inhuman world ’’( Lasch, 1977216). As proved preliminarily, over 275 million children worldwide were encyclopedically reported to have witnessed and accordingly exposed to domestic violence( UNICEF, 2006). also, in a US grounded study, about15.5 million children were reported to be living in homes passing domestic violence( Mc Donald et.al., 2006). likewise, it has been argued that families with continued connubial conflicts are likely to produce children who are vulnerable to problems of personality adaptation or abnormalities( Carlson, 2000; Abayomi, 2013) and considered vulnerable to a range of short and long term physical, internal, and sexual consequences( Carlson, 2000; Borgat et.al., 2006; Aihie, 2009; Abayomi and Olabode, 2013).

In the Nigerian society there’s shocking news of domestic violenceeverywhere. However, it may be about a hubby killing the woman or woman killing the hubby, If the news isn’t about the growing trend of “ baby making manufactories ” dotting the recesses and cracks of Nigeria. occasionally, it may be about a father violating his son by sexually abusing her. Nigerian women are beaten, ravished and indeed boggled by members of their own family for a supposed transgression, which can range from not having refections ready on time to visiting family members without their hubby’s authorization. Some women indeed witness acid attacks from their misters or fellows which beget extreme pain ordisfigurement, occasionally leading to the death of the victims. Domestic violence affects all social groups in the society and can correspond of physical, sexual, emotional, profitable and cerebral abuse( America Psychiatric Association 2005,p. 1 and Oifig an Tánaiste, 1997,p. 141). Although men can also be victims of domestic violence( Denis 2014), women and children suffer it most.

The current culture of silence and stigmatization of victims of domestic violence hinders public acknowledgment of the problem. There’s an critical need to challenge the social prejudices and the institutional structures of the Nigerian society in order to cover women, not just from peril, but also from sport, fear and insulation. The Nigerian Government as well as Nigerian Christians should rise to the occasion and find ways to attack the imminence of domestic violence. generally, the police have been reticent to intermediate in incidents involving domestic violence; they prefer to regard the family as a private realm. inaptly, woman beating is considered a “ private affair ” of the home. woman battering is “ culturally ” respectable; it’s considered as a “ normal way of life ” and indeed as a “ sign of love ”( Nwankwo, 2003,p. 5). In other African societies domestic violence is viewed as a private issue between consorts which doesn’t call for legal intervention. Women continue to suffer in silence and indeed accept domestic violence in their marriages as part of their fortune( Curran and Bonthuys, 2004). This is rather unfortunate for similar women to accept this atrocity as their fortune.

Domestic violence is the purposeful and patient abuse of anyone in the home in a way that causes pain, torture or injury. It’s a common circumstance throughout Nigeria and “ wears numerous faces ”. It involves discourteousness and incompetence that runs through women’s lives. It’s a violation of mortal rights( Nwankwo, 2003,p. 7). It refers to any vituperative treatment of one’s family member by another, therefore violating the law of introductory mortal rights. It includes battering of intimate mates and others, sexual abuse of children, connubial rape and traditional practices that are dangerous to women( Ahiie, 2009,p. 1). The disclosure from these delineations is that domestic violence is generally a deliberate action and not a mistake or an act of the devil

Statement Of Problem

This has been set up to be particularly true for youthful people who witnessed domestic violence( Abraham and Jewkes; Gupta etal., 2008). In addition, studies have set up that similar children frequently develop some situations of emotional and behavioural problems which may include nonage delinquency and passions of instability as they grow up( Alexandra, 2005; Stanley, 2011). While former literature on family and domestic violence have centered focus on the ruinous goods of domestic violence on women and the manner in which violence is executed among wedded and cohabiting couple, little is known about the effect of the violent acts on the substantiations especially the children of similar families most especially the girl child.
