CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In many ways, family is the oldest human institution; it is the most fundamental unit. It is the most fundamental unit of society. Whether or whether family life was strong or weak, the entire society lived or perished. Before the institution can be founded, a man and a woman must form a union, which is known as marriage.

Marriage, according to Mba (1980), is the state in which a man and a woman dedicate themselves to each other in their lives together, as well as in procreation and child rearing. Only the ideal of creation, as given to God’s people in the Old Testament, can provide clear and certain knowledge of this institution.

Things are changing today as a result of the rising tide of a tremendous new interest in human beings, fueled by the liberation movement. The life of a single woman, wisdom, divorce, and separation are all receiving a lot more attention and recognition. There are many books, articles, and dramas available today about the legal and emotional aspects of divorce, the changing status of working couples, the financial complexities of widowhood, the challenge of single parenthood, and the level of life of single women. The fundamental separation of homes is akin to being given the pieces of a difficult jigsaw puzzle and being asked to put them together in a meaningful and satisfying way.

In the past, marriage in Africa was frowned upon.
