IMPLICATION OF SECURITY CHALLENGES ON EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN NIGER STATE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Insecurity is one of the human security issues that Nigerians face. Several countries have struggled to reduce escalating rates of murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping, as well as drug trafficking, sex trafficking, illicit weapons trafficking, and a slew of other insecurity-inducing crimes. In Nigeria, insecurity is manifested by a surge in both violent and nonviolent crime. Okechukwu (2011).

Armed robbery, assassination, and kidnapping for ransom are engulfing the country like a tsunami, raising concerns and anxiety about public safety (Okechukwu, 2011). Nigeria has been on the global crime map since the 1980s, so insecurity has steadily increased (Dambazau, 2007) Poverty, poor parental upbringing, and avarice in children; a get-rich-quick mentality, and an ineffective insecurity control model

Insecurity is one of the human security challenges that Nigerians face. Several countries have struggled to reduce soaring rates of murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping, as well as drug trafficking, sex trafficking, illicit weapons trafficking, and a slew of other crimes that cause insecurity. In Nigeria, insecurity is manifested by a rapid increase in both violent and nonviolent crimes. Okechukwu (2011).

Armed robbery, assassination, and kidnapping for ransom are now devouring the country like a wave, instilling fears and anxiety about public safety (Okechukwu, 2011). Nigeria has been on the global crime map since the 1980s, so the increase in insecurity has been consistent (Dambazau, 2007) Poverty, poor parental upbringing, and avarice among children; a get-rich-quick mentality, and an ineffective insecurity control model

Among other things, a lack of national security has contributed to decades of insecurity.

According to Osawe (2015), insecurity depicts the government’s inability to provide a secure and safe environment, stating that “increasingly lethal firepower is likely to cause higher levels of destruction; and that the augmentation of sophisticated weaponry creates a vicious cycle in which competing militias engage in an arms race to gain dominance in capability”. Such competitions are frequently violent. In Nigeria, there are no crime-free zones. However, the incidence and mortality rate vary.

Criminality is the second most common source of violence in Nigeria, according to the Nigeria Watch Third Report on Violence in Nigeria (2006-2011), and it is especially prevalent in the south, particularly in densely populated cities such as Lagos.

as well as Port Harcourt. As a result, continuing to investigate both violent and nonviolent crimes in Nigeria is critical in order to identify trends and patterns. Given Nigeria’s alarming increase in criminal activities such as armed robbery, terrorism, and other related crimes, the environment for lives, property, and economic operations is critical (Osawe, 2015). Many causes of insecurity have been identified by academics and social analysts. One of them is the availability of weapons in the hands of unauthorized users, particularly civilians, which promotes insecurity in Nigeria.

The concept of education has many different meanings. It is regarded as a racetrack as well as “the various means by which a society transfers knowledge, including factual information and professional knowledge.”

Its members are taught skills as well as cultural norms and values.” According to Macionnis, who was quoted in Azikiwe, formal instruction under the supervision of highly qualified teachers is also part of education (2008). Education can also be defined as a process through which individuals are formally assisted in developing their talents, not only for their own benefit but also for the benefit of society as a whole, through proper direction and guidance (Okeke, 2003). To summarize, education’s goal is to help people become more successful and efficient at what they do while also contributing to societal progress.

According to Orikpe (2013), education is critical in shifting individuals’ behavioral patterns in the desired direction. The following subject is national security.It must be clarified. Security is not a new idea; it has always been a top priority in primitive societies. In a similar vein, Audu, Lukeman, and Mohammed (2014) argued that there appears to have been a shift away from a state-centric approach to a broader approach that emphasizes individuals, in which national security encompasses human security, human rights, and national development since the end of the Cold War. According to Iredia (2011), national security is a state’s ability to overcome obstacles. He went on to say that national security includes aspects such as employment security, water security, and food security, in addition to military strength, defense, and law enforcement. National security can also be defined as a state or circumstance in which a country’s and its citizens’ safety and security are jeopardized.

Its people’s most prized values are always protected and enhanced (Radda, 2013).

Security is frequently used to describe the state or sensation of being safe from harm or danger. It also includes defending and protecting learned values (Igbuzo, 2011). Security, according to Oche (quoted Nwaneggo & Odigbo 2013), refers to a country’s ability to defend and develop itself, promote its treasured values and legitimate interests, and improve the well-being of its people. Internal security means that there are no threats to one’s life or livelihood. According to Audu, Lukeman, and Mohammed (2014), security is any system designed to mitigate the most significant risks that prevent people from achieving their most cherished ideals. Insecurity denotes a state of vulnerability to assaults, danger, or threats to a people, their properties, and their lives.

treasured values, as well as the nation’s inability to defend its citizens, as the various definitions of security given above suggest.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

Niger’s insecurity is cause for concern. Security issues or insecurity have long plagued the state of affairs in Niger. Despite how critical a challenge it is to not only Niger but also national security, it has been overlooked for a long time, and insecurity persists, which may have a variety of negative consequences, particularly in the educational system of Niger’s indigenes. There has been little research on this topic pertaining to Niger; thus, this study will fill the gap as well as

give insight into the pressing need to confront and combat Niger’s insecurity, which represents a serious threat to both national security and immigration.

1.3 STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

Determine the effects of security issues on educational activities in Niger is the main goal of this study. Consequently, the following goals;

1. To identify the various security issues Niger State is facing.

2. To assess the level of security in Niger at the moment.

3. To ascertain how these security issues will affect educational initiatives.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The following queries serve as the study’s compass;

1. What security issues does Niger State currently face?

2. What is Niger’s current level of security?

3. What effects will these security challenges have on

educational pursuits

1.5 RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER STUDIES

Because it will raise awareness of the level of insecurity in Niger, this study will be important. The government will gain from this study because it will inform policymakers about how these security issues affect not only citizens’ educational pursuits but also other areas of the state. It will be helpful to other researchers because it will give them knowledge to enable them to conduct additional research.

1.6 THE STUDY’S SCOPE

Only the various security issues in Niger and how they affect the region’s educational initiatives will be covered in this study. It will only concentrate on Niger, leaving out all other regions of the nation.

1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The researcher’s ability to go above and beyond during this research was constrained by both a lack of funding and a lack of time.
