Influence Of Nigerian Home Video Films On Criminality

Chapter One

Preface

Background of the Study

Nigerian pictures, popularly appertained to as Nollywood pictures, produced by the Nigerian film assiduity uses formats similar as videotape mail, videotape compact slice( VCD), and more lately the digital videotape slice( DVD), in producing their pictures. These Nigerian pictures are also shown on some channels similar as “ Africa Magic ”, “ Nollywood ”, “ Magic Africa ”, etc, on DSTV, “ Cine Africa ”, “ MYTV ”, as well as other string networks which people subscribe to and which are viewed by the followership through the TV, which is classified under the types of media, among others.

The media is putatively seen as one of the agents of socialization, in the study of the society. This means that the media is able of impacting the station, character, life and culture of individualities either negatively or appreciatively. thus, it’s important to know what kind of pictures are being produced for viewing, since as a result of technology, further and further people in the society, have access to TV.

According to Daramola( 2005), “ The mass media are veritably important fraternizing agents. The mass media are substantially journals, magazines, radio, TV and pictures. They’re impersonal sources and they reach large, miscellaneous and extensively dispersed cult. Their exact part in socialization is controversial but as disseminators of news and entertainment, they’re extremely influential. The mass media thus, especially the TV, have been linked by several studies of having great influence upon socialization of children, adolescents and indeed grown-ups ”.

purposely or unconsciously, people, utmost especially children and youth, learn different aggressive and violent acts as they constantly watch these pictures and utmost times they end up flaunting similar acts within their neighborhood, in academy and within other social gatherings. As they watch pictures with violent themes, they’re likely to parade colorful felonious acts like bullying, remonstrating, violating and other tardy actions.( Oslow, 2003)

The themes of these pictures are indeed broad and covering Nigerian, African, and universal issues similar as, the immoralities of polygamy, redundant connubial affairs, elopement, different forms of rituals, cultism, treason, marriage, necromancy, incest, clash of Western and traditional societies, landlords and tenants, widowhood, teenage gestation, medicine trafficking, lot life, ethnical conflicts, religious conflicts, organized crime, murder, etc( Akpabio, 2003138- 139).

Some other pictures have themes solely grounded on Christianity and the immoralities that go on in churches and among pastors, similar as those produced by Mount Zion Ministries, for the purpose of spreading the philosophy and pointing out the ills that go on indeed in churches. Some exemplifications include, “ Busy but shamefaced ”, “ Blood on the balcony ”, “ One careless night ”, etc. numerous other pictures could be instructive and portray some Nigerian culture, while others could also be in form of pictures, showing the history of some Nigerian culture as well as how it has evolved. An illustration of similar talkie pictures is “ Towards a theories ”, produced in 2010. But unfortunately, the most common themes apparent in the maturity of Nigerian pictures includes violence, which screens cultism, murder, rape, aggressive fights, etc, and Romance, which covers coitus, bareness and roughness or the use of strong language, etc. Another common theme is that of rituals and the use of traditional drug.

utmost of these are putatively negative themes and are thus malignant to the development of personality and geste of its followership members in our contemporary society, especially the youth and children who are still at the primary and secondary stage of their socialization or literacy process, and are vulnerable or prone to picking up or espousing stations and actions from what they observe in the pictures.

The depiction of negative themes has been the base of Nigerian film assiduity, presumably because of the earnings gotten from constant patronage from its followership as well as the interest the followership members have in pornography, bareness, violence and the likes. The assiduity was indicted ofover-emphasizing negative themes. The National Film and Video Censors Board,( the assiduity nonsupervisory body), in its guidelines for stir picture directors, called for product to be above board in depiction of violence, crimes, coitus, pornography, roughness, profanity and other sensitive subjects( NFVBC, 2000107- 111).

moment, the nature of utmost Nigerian pictures have grown or evolved from bad to worse, especially on the part of those that portray coitus, pornography and roughness. From experience, a comparison of aged flicks similar as “ Castaway 1 & 2 ” and “ Night Out( Girls for trade) ” produced between 1999 and 2000 and further recent bones similar as “ Dirty Secret ” and “ Men in Love ” produced between 2010 and 2011, has proven that the position of the depiction of bareness, pornography and coitus has come worse than ahead, the actors and actresses are now more comfortable with being raw, while acting.

This is surely malignant to some followership members who’ll develop further interest in pornography and may ultimately come addicts. This won’t only increase the number of rape reports, but will also give rise to further and further cases of teenage gravidity, revocation, as well as abandonment of unwanted babies which increases the number of children to be watched for at nameless babies homes.

Another issue is the constant product and distribution of these pictures, which goes to show that people actually patronize them by buying the pictures for either particular viewing or to rent to people in videotape shops, in malignancy of the nature of utmost of these pictures.

thus, in trying to find out how home vids can pose as malignant to our contemporary society, it’s also important to find out what the members of the followership suppose about the nature of some of the themes portrayed in home vids, as well as what their stations towards similar pictures are, since it directly affect them.

Statement of the Problem

still, the result will surely prove that it’s children, adolescents and the youth, If an disquisition or a study is carried out on the order of people that make up the maturity of the followership members of Nigerian pictures. The nonage will be aged people because of the liabilities of going to work, earning a living and planning a home, which they’re faced with. As the youth grow and develop into majority, they gradationally lose interest in watching pictures because they begin to prioritize some effects over others and also develop a sense of responsibility( Daramola, 2005).

A study by Liebert and Poulson( 1972), cited by Hess at al( 1988), reveals that children in Canada begin to watch TV before they’re three times old. By the age of eighteen, a child will have spent further time in front of the TV than anywhere differently, including academy. In the United States of America, children watch over three hours of TV per day.

Schaefer and Lamm( 1997) study, also reveal that piecemeal from sleeping, watching TV is the utmost time- consuming exertion of youthful people. The same trend is going on in the Nigerian contemporary society, particularly in the civic metropolises. It’s veritably common to find children watching pictures and vids every day.

Since members of the followership of Nigerian pictures also constitute members of the society, and the media, especially TV, is also able of impacting an existent’s geste , the negative goods of these vids will also laterally affect the society at large. That’s to say that if people borrow some certain geste as a result of these pictures, it could laterally affect the society by creating social problems similar as, increase in rape reports, revocation,over-crowding of nameless babies homes due to unwanted babies, violence, increased crime rates and juvenile delinquencies, e tc.

thus, this study seeks to look at the extent of nastiness of Nigerian pictures in our contemporary society, by looking at the nature and content of these pictures and why it’s still being patronized by followership members despite its malignant nature.

Significance of the Study

It’s egregious that Nollywood to a veritably large extent contributes to violence in Nigeria. A worrisome aspect of these flicks is that none of the film- makersactively canvasses for the despondency of the negative tendencies acted out on the screen. And the failure by movie directors to make any strong comment against social ills is a short incoming of the flicks that use violence in their dispatches. The recrimination is that similar flicks rather than amelioring violent acts in the society tend to aggravate them, Folarin,( 1999).

The study looks at the nastiness of Nigerian pictures in our contemporary society. The study doesn’t dispute the fact that the TV which is one aspect of the media, is also veritably salutary to literacy and development processes, and as a matter of fact, goes a long way in socializing individualities by helping them blend more fluently into the society due to the quantum of information passed on to the followership through well- coordinated stir filmland with colorful contents and stories.

As a medium of communication, the home vids are influential media and have the capacity of transferring a wrong communication or print to the viewing followership especially youthful people in their vulnerable stages of growth. also, similar print could spell a big problem to the entire society owing to the fact that the youth learn more fluently from what they see or observe than from what they hear.

still, as every exploration work is anticipated to add to the being knowledge, this study should serve as a referencing material to scholars and other experimenters who’ll be carrying out exploration on affiliated studies.

Also Nigerian film makers will profit from the information contained then as a yard stick to measure the position of their sins and compare it with the strengths they’ve which could serve as a companion to correcting their weak points for a better future of their products and the society at large.

This study’s significance is also maintainable on the grounds that it’ll contribute largely to the understanding of the negative goods of home vids or the malignant nature of some home vids towards our contemporary society, which would goad film makers to ameliorate on the quality and the contents of the pictures produced.

Parents will also come apprehensive or be exposed to the negative goods of pictures and how they can impact their children’s geste both on the long and short run. This would beget them to seek means of controlling their children’s viewing habits and be conscious of what they watch and the themes bedded in these pictures. Resultantly, this would reduce the negative impacts, as well as the position of nastiness caused by movie watching in our contemporary society.

Grounded on colorful propositions, or rather as a result of these propositions, film makers will also try to cleave to National Broadcasting Corporation( NBC) laws by secerning the age conditions for colorful pictures, while the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation will also try to review and bowdlerize the pictures before they get into rotation. And the parents on the other hand will insure that children watch only the pictures specified for their colorful periods.

To conclude, this study is significant because it seeks to probe these issues of negativity in movie themes and its goods on people and the society at large, as well as identify and proffer possible results to check the problem, by chancing out the roots of these problems. Although it may be insolvable to fully abolish them, the study seeks to discover how the problem can be reduced and controlled.

Compass/ Limitations of the Study

This study on the influence of Nigerian Home videotape flicks on crime.

Limitations of Study

1. Financial constraint-inadequate fund tends to stymie the effectiveness of the experimenter in sourcing for the applicable accoutrements , literature or information and in the process of data collection( internet, questionnaire and interview).

2. Time constraint- The experimenter will contemporaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This accordingly will cut down on the time devoted for the exploration work.
