Abstract

This study was conducted to look at how Bells University’s library in Ota, Ogun State, delivers its services using cutting-edge technologies. The study specifically looked at the reasons limiting the use of innovative technology in the provision of information services. The study assesses the advantages of novel technologies in providing information services. The study also identifies innovative technologies that are useful for disseminating knowledge. The survey descriptive research design was used for the investigation. 30 replies from the survey were verified in total. The comments collected and analyzed led to the conclusion that the labor market, the economy, a lack of leadership, and short-term thinking are the elements that mitigate against the use of innovation technologies in the delivery of information services. Additionally, the use of cutting-edge technology in the delivery of information services results in improved communication that is quicker, easier, and more effective as well as improved ordering and stock management systems, new sales channels, and the capacity to create novel, creative strategies. Last but not least, websites, emails, social media accounts, and mobile technology are some of the innovative technologies useful in the delivery of information dissemination. The study concludes that in order for professionals to adapt to the realities of the modern world, there is a need for proper capacity building. Additionally, practitioners need the right training in order to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and values that will help them with the task at hand. The many areas of information management should be thoroughly explained to all stakeholders for a meaningful transformation process, to say nothing of the fact that this is necessary. In order to comply with best practices around the world, the government should also provide facilities with appropriate financial support to provide relevant and modern information technology infrastructure.

Introduction

The Study’s History

The primary responsibilities of libraries include collecting, organizing, archiving, retrieving, and providing users with information. The main goal of libraries has always been this, from ancient times to the modern Internet era (Gopinath, etal. 2001). However, there has been a remarkable paradigm shift in the delivery of library and information services globally since the turn of the 21st century. It is obvious how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has an impact on every aspect of human development, and the importance of this impact for libraries and information services cannot be overstated. This claim is supported by the literature that is currently available (Sridhar, 1999; Igun, 2006) and observations made all around the world. The distribution of library and information services is changing in the modern world from its manual processes to new approaches with the use of technology. In order to provide services to the clients through acceptable channels for information access with a collection of technologies known as the internet, new technology and communication tools are used. The internet’s technology has the power to support, underpin, and improve educational achievements for the good of all. (2013) Esew and Ikyembe.

As a result of this progress, electronic library services have begun to appear, serving as the foundation for digital libraries (Youngok, 2006). In terms of philosophy, methodology, and information delivery, library services are assuming a new dimension. The move from traditional modes of information distribution to electronic and web-based formats has been demonstrated by a global trend. Traditional collections are being replaced by hybrid ones, if not entirely new ones. Even though electronic and digital libraries share the same goal as traditional libraries, namely the preservation, organization, and distribution of information resources, this change in structure is not without its challenges (youngok, 2006). Similar to this, Mwamba (2002) noted that in the case of Nigeria, there is a shift in the operation’s focus from library-centred to information-centred; from the library as an institution to the library as an information provider; and from the librarian as a skilled information specialist operating in all-related information environments, which require the use of new methods known as automation of library functions for the improvement of information access and delivery not only to the general public but also to the government. It is well known that access to information through reading, which fosters a fruitful method of enhancing one’s knowledge and comprehension, is essential for an individual’s mental, social, and economic development.

There have been improvements in the 21st century that aim to elevate libraries and their services to new pedestals. ”Libraries must evolve from resource-centered, institutionalized, and physically tied to network-based,” according to Hayes (1998). However, becoming a network-based library has several technological ramifications, with information technology being the most important one (Sridar 1989, 1995, 1997, and 1999). Literature has also demonstrated that the shift in the nature and responsibilities of libraries in relation to the digital environment has necessitated the development of new skills and abilities (Yongok 2006).

It is important to note that information services such as libraries play a critical role in ensuring that people have unrestricted access to the materials they need to grow economically and culturally. By doing thus, they effectively support the advancement and preservation of intellectual freedom while defending democratic principles and basic human rights. By aiming to assist everyone in their user communities, regardless of age, gender, economic or job position, literacy or technical skills, cultural or ethnic origin, religious or political opinions, sexual orientation, or physical or mental ability, they promote social inclusion. The communities they serve could be physically separated from one another or, increasingly, only connected by technology and a common internet (IFLA 2003). This new attitude toward information creation, access, retrieval, storage, and availability for use represents a significant shift toward the development of an information and knowledge-based society that benefits everyone.

Description Of The Problem

For many generations, libraries have existed in a variety of settings, including vast, purpose-built buildings, rooms within larger organizations, and small, ad hoc structures. The libraries then made additional inroads into locations that were inaccessible by land, air, water, or by using a beast of burden as a mode of transportation. Many libraries today are “hybrid,” combining physical space and collection with an online virtual library of electronic resources and services. These developments indicate a paradigm shift away from an outdated operational approach and toward one assisted by various forms of technology. Access to reliable, current, and pertinent information is one of the expectations of a library customer. This was a challenging effort, but technology advancements have made it possible to offer improved information services from a single collection, and new resource sharing programs have been established to fulfill user needs. Due to the internet and its associated technologies, the incapacity of a library to satisfy every user’s need at any given time can now be addressed. By utilizing the world’s information, all needs are met swiftly and effectively.

Purpose Of The Study

The Bells University, Ota, Ogun State, library service delivery using innovative technology is the study’s overall goal. The precise goals are as follows:

to investigate the barriers to the use of innovative technology in the provision of information services.

to assess the advantages of cutting-edge technology in the provision of information services.

to ascertain the cutting-edge technology suitable for the distribution of information.

1.4 Research Problem

For this study, the following inquiries have been prepared:

What deterrents exist to the use of innovative technology in the provision of information services?

What advantages do cutting-edge technologies offer in the provision of information services?

What cutting-edge technologies are suitable for the distribution of information?

1.5 Relationship To Other Studies

This study will examine the relationship between innovative technology and the delivery of library services at The Bells University in Ota, Ogun State. It will therefore be important in the following ways:

Managers of libraries: This study will be important to library managers because they will recognize the necessity to modernize the library with cutting-edge technology to support the efficient operation of the library delivery service.

Academic community: This work will add to the body of knowledge, making it important to the academic world.

1.6 The Study’s Scope

This study will look at the things that prevent new technologies from being used to supply information services. The effectiveness of cutting-edge technology in the provision of information services will also be assessed by the study. The study will also determine the cutting-edge technologies that are most effective for disseminating information. As a result, the study will only cover Bells University in Ota, Ogun State.

Limitations of the research

The following are some of the variables that limited this study:

the same problems that plague other types of research, such as the lack of pertinent, up-to-date information on the subject and the inability to collect data

The researcher encountered financial limitations when procuring pertinent resources, printing surveys, and compiling them.

Time factor: The researcher’s discomfort comes from having to juggle writing the research and doing other academic work at the same time, which poses additional limitation.
