INVESTIGATION INTO THE INFLUENCE OF GLOBALIZATION ON THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ECONOMICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

One of humanity’s most important activities is the pursuit of knowledge, and it is centered on the outside world. Man’s interaction with his surroundings causes him to change his behavior as a direct result of the lessons he has learned. A variety of aspects of a person’s personality can influence how much they interact with their surroundings. Maintaining one’s status as a member of society over time necessitates acting in a socially acceptable manner. In contrast to previous centuries, the twentieth century saw unprecedented global economic growth, particularly during the interwar period. People all over the world have abandoned more traditional ways of life since that time. The Access to international capital flow, technology, cheaper imports, broader export markets, and increasing competition, division of labor, and acceptance of the concept of comparative cost advantage were all hallmarks of the twentieth century. Since 1970, the per capita incomes of some nations, particularly those in Asia, have been rapidly approaching those of industrialized nations as a direct result of the perceived relevance of globalization. This has brought prosperity to these countries. As a result of this, a new global order has emerged, indicating the integration of power structures. Economists envision globalization as a situation in which artificial barriers like tariffs, quotas, and exchange controls are removed. This is followed by a setting.

In which liberal market forces usher in a culture and era of free flow of investments marked by shared artifacts, identical production processes, and tastes. Education is one of the many aspects of human life that have been influenced by the globalization trend. Globalization is an ongoing process.

A number of developing countries have seen an expansion in the range of educational options available to their citizens as a result of the arrival of educational institutions from the West in the twentieth century. Some people believe that this procedure represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for residents of poor countries to improve both their level of education and their level of expertise. It is the goal of educational globalization. which can be defined as the transfer of information from developed countries such as the West to developing countries such as China and India in order to improve the knowledge, talents, and skills of those who receive it. Globalization, as it currently exists, is one of the few tools available for achieving high levels of development and economic stability. On the other hand, for a developed nation, globalization will be one of the tools to use in order to stay afloat in the global ocean, particularly in the face of economic adversity, natural and man-made disasters, disease outbreaks, war, and so on. Globalization, as it currently exists, is one of the few tools available to developing economies for achieving high levels of development.

As a result of the consequences of globalization, there are ongoing changes in the educational system. Globalization’s effects on education bring rapid advances in technology and communications, which are predicting changes in school systems around the world as ideas, values, and knowledge, changing the roles of students and teachers, and producing a shift in society from an industrialization-based society to an information-based society. Children, the world’s future citizens, are being transformed into “global citizens” as a result of the rise of a global society, which is being driven by technological and communication advancements. These children are bright individuals with a diverse set of skills and knowledge that can be applied in a competitive, information-based society.

Recognizing the significance of knowledge,  Countries’ future often depends on their ability to compete in a global market, which requires knowledge, skills, and intellectual capacity to meet the challenges of accelerated change and uncertainty. Industrial-based economies are giving way to knowledge-based industries in this market, and countries are realizing the value of knowledge, skills, and intellectual capacity. Education is a lifelong process of learning and training with the goal of acquiring skills and information that are portable and can be used in competitive marketplaces where knowledge and information are exchanged as a commodity. As a result of the introduction of technology into the classroom, students are producing papers, assignments, and projects in electronic form, which is changing the nature of how education is delivered. is given to students. As more educational programs and materials are made available in electronic form, as teachers prepare materials in electronic form, and as students generate materials in electronic form, this is gradually giving way to a new form of electronic literacy. According to a United Nations poll conducted in 2002, a large number of people had lost their jobs, while others had witnessed the disintegration of their communities, and some even felt that their identities were under threat. As a result, for developing countries like Nigeria, the aspect of globalization and information and communications technology (ICT) that should concern them is inequality and the unequal distribution of benefits around the world. This

was backed up in the global community by Kofi Annan’s (1999) remarks that “the internet bears the greatest promise to mankind ever known.” The internet is a resource for studying at a distance and expanding access to high-quality educational opportunities.

As a result of this, technology predicts a shift in the way educational content is distributed, with an increased reliance on electronic sources. As a primary component of globalization, such developments, as well as the introduction of video conferencing and the Internet, are contributing to a rapid breakdown of distance barriers. According to Mustafa, Kemal Ataturk (2004), “in order to combat covetousness, greed, and spite, inhabitants all must work together.”  “Everyone on the planet must be educated.” This addition provides additional evidence of how education can help to develop an equal and unified society, a strong and self-sufficient country, a great and dynamic nation on education, and particularly Nigeria. Education is the only way to ensure that people have the necessary level of competence to keep up with today’s society’s rapid pace of change, which necessitates ever-increasing levels of sophistication. At this point, it is critical to emphasize unequivocally that in this information age, globalization has enormous effects on the learning and teaching process, among other things; as a result, it has the potential to change the outcome of educational input and output. Their point of view on the

The subject matter, economics, and its position in the twenty-first century have been significantly reshaped as a result of globalization’s significant impact.

1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM

Understanding economics and being able to apply that understanding to serious problems and concerns are both necessary components of responsible citizenship in a democratic society. Citizens must be able to understand and apply fundamental economic principles in order to effectively fulfill their roles as producers, consumers, investors, critics, analysts, commentators, and agitators, as well as voters in public elections. Large-scale improvements in people’s abilities to perform these functions will benefit both individuals and the country as a whole.

However, the topic Economics is not an easy subject to teach in Nigerian secondary schools. These difficult issues include students’ lack of interest in and commitment to their studies, inadequately qualified and professional teachers, the use of crude materials for teaching, a lack of government support in terms of providing modern tools, family history, societal and environmental factors, the absence of a tranquil learning environment, and other similar issues. When compared to other countries around the world in the same category as Nigeria, all of these difficulties have dug deep into our educational system, causing it to lag far behind the others. As a result, in terms of education and Despite all of the issues it raises, it is critical that both instructors and students understand how to use and integrate new technology, and that they are encouraged to cultivate a sense of curiosity in themselves. Although the costs of modern information and communication technologies are high, the costs of not using them in education are much higher because students are denied access to knowledge, communication, and innovation. It implies that the next generation will be caught in the same cycle of poverty and ignorance that their parents and grandparents were. It also means giving up one of the simplest ways to keep a job and get financial help. As a result, the research will look into the effects of globalization on teaching and learning.

As a subject, economics is a process.
