LOAN RECOVERY PROBLEM IN COMMERCIAL BANKS OF NIGERIA

Abstract

The problem of loan collection in commercial banks in Nigeria is as old as the existence of commercial banks in Nigeria. The problem has wreaked immense havoc on Nigeria’s economic development and further crippled Nigeria’s commercial banks. The impact of commercial bank loan collection problems in Nigeria can be both positive and negative. In the positive case, the financial subsector of the economy has room for development, but the situation is reversed. The impact of loan collection issues has been negative most of the time, and that downside is at the heart of our concerns. The aftermath of this issue is a predicament for Nigeria’s commercial banks. In connection with this issue, it is pertinent to consider the issue of loan collections in commercial banks in Nigeria. The impact on the financial sub-sector of the economy and proposals for possible measures to mitigate this problem in order to create room for development and growth in the financial sub-sector of the economy.
