Television Viewing Habit Among Families

Chapter One

Preface

Background to the Study

According to UNESCO( 1999), TV is ubiquitous, with at least one TV set present in utmost family homes in developing countries. It is, thus, not surprising that time spent in front of a TV set watching TV, vids or DVDs is one of the most current rest time conditioning among youthful people in developing nations( LarsonR.W( 1990), Verma S( 1990) and StrasburgerV.C( 2004)).

While there are implicit benefits from watching some TV programs, vids and DVDs by families, there are enterprises that time spent in front of a TV, particularly during daylight hours, displaces more cognitively and physically grueling hobbies on the family members( Huston et al;( 1999)). The substantiation that physical exertion among children and adolescents is displaced by time spent in front of TV is, still, equivocal( Biddle et al;( 2004)).

nonetheless, there’s harmonious substantiation that time spent in front of a TV is associated with a number of negative issues among adolescents, including fat and rotundity( Gortmaker et al;( 1996))( although it has been argued that this relationship isn’t clinically significant,( Marshall et al;( 2004)), poor salutary habits( Jeffery et al;( 1998)), and social problems(e.g., aggressive geste , low academy achievement)( Strasburger et al;( 2004)).

Despite the enormous substantiation on the need for healthy stimulating terrain and healthy probative family relations for the growing child, TV viewing( television) seems to be replacing family interpersonal relations. TV viewing according to Van( 1990) refers to the art of spending time in front of a TV screen while sharing laboriously or passively in what’s being displayed.

TV viewing habit refers to the quantum of time an individual spends viewing TV programmes, the nature of similar programmes, the age of the bystander and the viewing hour( Jason and Johnson, 1995). In this study, TV viewing habit refers to the average diurnal viewing time of families in Osun State.

TV viewing habit may impact appreciatively or negatively on the families ’ cognitive development. Viewing TV programmes for about 1- 2 hours daily on the normal may enhance families ’ cognitive chops development while a habit of 3 hours or further of TV viewing of general followership programmes or cartoon shows according to Wiecha, Sobol, Peters, and Gortmaker,( 2001) may reduce the time children would spend engaging verbally and socially with family members and significant others which are prerequisite for effective cognitive chops development.

TV viewing isn’t condemned fully in the life of families. It has some graces if well cleaned by parents and other grown-ups. A study by Rosenberg( 1994) showed that TV has been the most effective of all mass media in making people apprehensive of a wide range of mortal problems ranging from pollution to homelessness and adding mindfulness and acceptance of colorful kinds of illness both physical and internal.

Evra( 1998) in his study noted that TV viewing can promotepro-social geste , stimulate the imagination, educate letters and figures and enhancepre-reading and voluntary reading chops among children in a family.
