The effect of the use of demonstration teaching method and guided discovery teaching method on the student academic achievement when taught the electric circuit in physics

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Physics is a very crucial branch of science for effective living in the modern age of science and technology. The application of physics in terms of its principle, and skills in every day of human activity is of great importance. This importance of physics is not excluded in the concept of electric circuit.

The concept of physics not only in secondary school should be taught in a way that the student can easily understand and apply in their daily living and this has been included as one of the general objective in the physics curriculum for secondary school.

Student can only achieve when the methods of teaching is properly applied according to the concept being taught. The researcher want to compare the demonstration teaching method and guided discovery learning method in the concept of electric circuit on student achievement in physics.

1.1   BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Physics has been seen as being so abstract by some students even by some of its teachers both in secondary school and higher institution. In this work, though the abstraction of physics cannot be fully dealt with, the student understanding will be enlighten and expanded by demonstrating and guiding them on the concept of electric circuit. It is important for the teacher of physics to be able to teach effectively in order to clean the minds of the student on the abstraction of physics.

1. 2   STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Student performance in secondary school physics has not been very good for the past years. This poor performance reflect yearly in their WAEC and NECO examinations even in their respective school examination. The method of teaching sciences and the instructional materials used has contributed greatly to this poor performances by the secondary school students.

Physic teachers should be well invested on the method of teaching of physics concept in order to boost the understanding of students.          Government should provide secondary school with a good physic curriculum that will help to improve the performance of the Student.

Student learn by doing. There are methods of teaching such as; Demonstration, Guided discovery, lecture method and discussion method which could be used by the teachers to teach effectively.

This project therefore base on the achievement of student in physic on the concept of electric circuit using demonstration and guided discovery teaching method.

1.3    PURPOSE OF STUDY

The general purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the use of demonstration teaching method and guided discovery teaching method on the student academic achievement when taught the electric circuit in physics.

This study will specifically compare;

  1. The achievements of student who were taught using demonstration and guided discovery teaching methods.
  2. The achievement of boys and girls who were taught using guided discovery method of teaching.
  3. The achievement of boys and girls who were taught using demonstration method of teaching.

1.4   RESEARCH QUESTION

  1. To what extent will the teaching of electric circuit using demonstration and guided discovery affect the achievement student in physics.
  2. To what extent does gender difference affect academic achievement of student using guided discovery method?
  3. To what extent does gender difference affect academic achievement of student using demonstration method?

1.5   RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

  1. There is no significance difference between the mean achievement of student taught electric circuit using demonstration and guided discovery teaching method.
  2. There is no significance difference between the achievement of male and female student taught electric circuit using guided discovery.
  3. There is no significance difference between the achievement of male and female student taught electric circuit using demonstration method.

1.6   SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

This study will enlighten science teachers on the need to use guided discovery in teaching science. This study will serve as the base for student of sciences who will want to have an advance knowledge on electricity and it application.

1.7   Delimitation of the Study

This study was carried out in two (2) public secondary in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. It covers Senior Secondary school one (SSS1) student’s academic achievement when taught electric circuit using demonstration and guided discovery method of teaching. Gender was also taken into consideration as a factor in determining the Academy achievement of the students using demonstration and guided discovery method of teaching.

1.8   Limitation of Study

This study came across the following limitation;

  1. Poor Funding
  2. High cost of transportation

1.9   Definition of Terms

Demonstration Teaching Method

Demonstration teaching methods is a method of teaching in which the teacher show the student how a particular task is achieved and the student learn by doing what the leader did.

Guided Discovery Teaching Method

Guided discovery  teaching method is a method of teaching whereby  the teacher only show the student some part  of learning and allows  them to discover the remaining part  by  guiding them.

Academic Achievement

This is regarded as the display of knowledge attained or still shown in the subject as are indicated by test scores or marks assigned by the teachers using standardize rule of assignment of such scores.

Electric circuit

Electric circuit is the complete path provided for the flow of electric current.
