The Impact Of Phone-in Programmes

Chapter One

Preface

Background Of The Study

Communication is said to be the life blood of every society. There’s thus a need to know what communication is each about.

Communication as a discipline has continued to attract new delineations from time to time so that no single description is accepted by scholars interested in the field.

Communication as an academic discipline, occasionally called “ communicology ” relates to all the ways we communicate, so it embraces a large body of study and knowledge. Although, there’s such a thing as one- way communication, communication can be better described as a two way process in which there’s an exchange of ideas, studies, passions towards a mutually accepted thing or direction.

Hence, the process of a phone- in- programme. Mass media are important communication strategy to induce mindfulness and circulate information. In utmost developing countries, Nigeria inclusive, radio is an effective medium to reach the general population. Unlike television and print, radio phone- in- programmes are popular platforms for direct followership participation to change views and voice enterprises on issues to increase knowledge, encourage open discussion on health and other socially applicable issues and promote sustained behavioural change.

In broadcasting, a phone- heft is a programme format in which listeners are invited to state their live commentary by telephone, generally in respect of a specific content named for discussion on the day of broadcast.

According to exploration, BBC radio Nottingham is credited with having vented the first phone- heft on February 4 1968, a programme called “ What Are They Up To Now ”?

Speech- grounded Talk Radio UK was launched in 1995, with important of its programming featuring phone- in- programmes.

Ian Hutchby delved poor relations in phone- in- programmes looking at arguments and competitions. Using discussion analysis, he describes how the host retains power through bias similar as “ the alternate position ”- the conception of going second in a discussion, giving the host time to formulate a response.

also, the last word is always the broadcasting word. The followership can choose to end the discussion, but they’re doing so by withdrawing from the interactional arena. Hutchby( 1996) Talbot etal.

Though it can not be stated in factual fact the date phone- in- programme began in Nigeria. According to exploration, it started before the arrival of global system for mobile telecommunications( GSM) putting it in the 1980s. still, since the preface of GSM in 2000 there has been an increase in followership participation in phone- in- programmes.

Statement Of The Exploration Problem

This exploration work is informed by this invention in broadcasting especially the preface of phone- in member in nearly every programme being vented on both public and private radio stations across the country.

One of the problems is the recrimination of having a wrong followership choice which is more imagined. This would make the presenter have negative feedback. This is because there are some followership members who share in conversations that aren’t meant for them.

There’s no gainsaying the fact that radio stations are out to perform the introductory part of informing, educating and entertaining the target followership. still, another problem is the lure of including phone- in parts in utmost of the programmes which are able of rendering them potty, taking into consideration the number of people that can go to buy a mobile phone.

Yet another problem is the fact that phone- in programmes are inversely seen as an escapist approach of getting people to share in programmes when they aren’t adequately informed about the issues involved.

Objects Of The Study

It’s noticed that the idea of phone- heft is now current among radio stations. This study is on radio broadcasting. This decision is made from the fact that the medium appears the cheapest and most accessible to the common man as the radio set is movable and can fluently pick up signals from far distances.

The arrival of phone- in programmes on radio has increased the pace of followership participation in radio programmes.

This exploration work takes a critical look at “ Soul Mender ” as a phone- in programme introduced to enable the public make meaningful benefactions to issues under discussion which are considered as having direct effect on them both collectively and inclusively.

The end of this exploration work is to find out if the programme justifies its actuality.

This exploration work is carried out towards formulating a guiding principle that could help regulate followership participation on radio with a view to having a standard format that could enhance further qualitative programming

Significance Of The Study

A phone- in programme could be an immediate way of having feedback on any given idea, policy or measure about to be introduced either by a commercial association, an individual or government of the day. It’s obviously the stylish form of testing the adequacy of new ideas, opinions and programs.

This study is thus significant because it’s able of enabling the slice of opinion without inescapably witnessing the tedious voting process. This would make the listeners part and parcel( active) of decision timber or policy expression.

The participatory nature of phone- in programme is anticipated to give an individual radio listener a sense of belonging and not make him an inactive receiver of information and ideas passed across by the radio.

It’s thus the opinion of this experimenter that the appraisal of this phone- in programme will go a long way to enhancing quality product and donation, as well as making it truely followership participatory.

In Nigeria, there are colorful radio stations that air phone- in programmes either as a member in a programme or as a whole phone- in programme. It’s thus insolvable to study the whole radio houses in Nigeria. thus the experimenter decided to study Grace95.5 FM in Lokoja, Kogi state.

The said station airs five phone- in programmes.
