The Impact Of Women Journalist On Nigerian Broadcast Media

Chapter One

Preface

Background of the study

T Media has a part to play in the struggle for gender metamorphosis and bridging gap between social individualities of woman an man. Communication studies, indeed of the radical critical tendency, have long sounded to be largely gender eyeless( maybe more a matter of reluctance to see), one can now justifiably, speak of a culture feminist media studies design( Van Zoonen 1991; 1994 Gallagher 2003). The relationship between media and women has a certain structure where woman is trapped as an object.

The part of women in media- decision timber is reflected in the poor representation of women issues and enterprises. The drastically changing media( publish) can be seen through times or especially inpost-liberalization period, media has come request- acquainted. Media- request on one hand has expanded openings for women but the kind of ‘ beats ’ or ‘ job ’ are assigned to women intelligencer is to keep them confined to soft- beat( Tomar Ranu 2009) like handling point jotting or shallow jottings.

The reconstruction and representation of gender issue is dealt within patriachal converse of the media. The question of gender touches nearly every aspect of the media- culture relationship. Van Zoonen( 1991) writes that the meaning of gender is noway given but varies according to specific culture and literal setting is subject to ongoing digressive struggle and concession( p45).

Then important issue is professional inequality which is bedded in media and is explosively grounded on social differences between man and womanj. The rejection and oppression of women by international pots is restated into media representation and employment.

To address these issues UNESCO commissioned major review of the literature worldwide related to women and media( Gallagher 1981). Gallagher( 1981) notes that her review- present a picture remarkable only for its over all thickness when compared from one country to another( p 70). The report offers considerable substantiation in support of conclusion that’s representation of women can best be described as narrow.

On film, press and the broadcast media, women conditioning and interests generally go no further than the confines of home and family. Characterized as basically dependent. Both as characters in fictional media material and as newsmakers in the press and broadcasting, women are numerically under representation- and absence which underlines their borderline and inferior staus in numerous spheres of social, profitable and culture lives. current news values define most women and utmost women ’ problem as unnewsworthy, admitting women to content primarily as women , mama or daughters of men in the news in their own right, they make the caption generally only as fashionable or entertainment numbers.

Meanwhile since the general public can not be in all places at the same tme. intelligencers through the media bring the world closest by reporting politics, sport, disasters indeed in far down China, UK, US, Russiae.t. c within some seconds.

In addition to the different forms of violence against intelligencers, both men and women, and obstacles to their work, including pitfalls, murder, confiscation of material, expatriation, apprehensions and intimidation, womanish intelligencers face certain unsexed pitfalls within this manly dominated profession.

Despite, the challenges facing women intelligencers each over the world yet they’re contributing trimendously to the development of the media assiduity and broadcast media in particular.
