The Influence Of Fathering Style On Social Adjustment Among Adolescents

Abstract

This study examined the influence of begetting style on social adaptation among adolescents in Surulere LED of Lagos State.

Four suppositions were formulated to guide the study.

To achieve this end, the experimenter formulated four thesis to companion the study

There’s no significant influence of begetting styles on social adaptation of adolescents.

There’s no significant impact of begetting styles on propensity to early gestation among womanish adolescents.

There’s no significant artistic impact on begetting style on social adaptation of adolescents.

There’s no significant influence of religious impact of begetting style on social adaptation of adolescents.

The sample comprised two hundred( 200) actors named through stratified arbitrary slice from four elderly secondary seminaries in Surulere LED of Lagos State. A well structured questionnaire was administered and used to solicit responses from the repliers.

The analysis of friction( ANOVA) was used to assay the result at0.05 position of significance. Fisher’s protected t- test formular was used to do a pairwise comparison of differences in- group means( X) performing from influence of begetting styles on social adaptation of adolescents. The result of the data analysis attained indicated as follows

There’s significant influence of begetting styles on social adaptation of adolescents. It was also set up out that there’s no significant religious impact in begetting style of social adaptation of adolescents.

The family comprises the father as head and breadwinner, the children who must take orders or directions from the father. thus, for the father to raise meaningful and responsible children in the society the requirements to borrow a certain style of leadership or parenthood.1.1 Theoretical Background Arione,( 1994) used two typologies to describe begetting styles demandingness and responsiveness; that when crossed yields four begetting styles. According to Arione, authoritative fathers are both responsive and demanding. They set clear reasonable norms for responsible geste that are harmonious with children’s development and give explanation for their positions. They’re also kind, warm, loving and responsive to children’s requirements and will negotiate their prospects. Authoritarian fathers are only demanding but not responsive. They only place values on obedience to rules and discourage give- and- take between father and child and don’t take their children’s requirements into consideration. Permissive fathers are also indulging, they’re responsive but not demanding. These fathers are warm, accepting and tolerant of the child’s impulses. They also make many demands on the child for mature geste , but don’t use important or no discipline and avoid plying their authorities. More lately, permissive fathers have been separated from neglecting- rejecting bones , who also don’t make numerous demands because they’re disentangled and they’re neither demanding nor responsive. therefore this has caused the girl child who couldn’t get what she wants from her father to use what she has to get what she wants outside the home. The attendant effect has been early sexual exertion which is the result of early gestation of the child. Sexual indiscipline among adolescents in secondary seminaries includes adding rates of adulterous coitus, promiscuity, harlotry, teenage gestation, teenage marriage and fatherhood, illegal revocations, child abuse and abandonment and unseasonable death for teenage maters as a result of revocation. The responsibility of raising up a child to come socially and psychologically well acclimated grown-up is substantially that of the father. According to Lamb( 1997) a father is a man who begets a child, a manly parent, the author of a family or race, one who exercises maternal care over another, a guardian or protection. Nwadinigwe( 2004) presuppositions that within the family, part sharing among the parents live. The father is anticipated to punish the child and insure he’s brought up in proper way. A father according to Clinton( 1995), is a man stabilizing influence upon his children, furnishing means by which his children may face the outside world with confidence. For case, a girl child whose father doesn’t meet up with her demands or requirements may go out to form abettors with the peers who would obviously misadvice, mislead and misdirect her into joining gangs of sexual miscellaneous persons, women of easy merits who are in the ha its of using their bodies to acquire what they warrant from their homes. The gradational process of promiscuity could graduate the child into being a mama at tender age, harlotry and the loss of educational career cum openings in future. Also fathers who are too rigid or authoritative, may produce children whose characters are deceptive. These children may be lamb in homes but wolves in the outside world. In any case, they’re fakers who hide their characters in the presence of their autocratic fathers, but tend to live another pattern of life entirely from the bones they parade in the home. At home they’re quiet and innocent, outside the home, they’re wayward, sensuous and miscellaneous. This hide and child to adulterous sexual conditioning and accordingly unwanted or indeed revocation and loss of precious tender life( Uzoma, 1998). The sociological proposition of emblematic commerce posits that children and babies are ignorant of rules and places of the society when they’re born and to turn them to socially responsible beings, they must acquire new places by their relations with significant others especially, their fathers, maters and siblings. Through commerce with the father who disciplines directs and nurtures the child, the child acquires social morals, values and chops within the culture. The father’s places in traditional perspective is being frosty and distant. A situation whereby the father is admired but stressed by the children who noway learned to know him veritably well, unlike the mama who watch for the home and raised the children. It in this light that Osarenren( 1998) claimed that the process of socialization starts in early life and is a life long process. also, Howels( 1985) saw the fathers as inculcating stations and behaviours that their children demanded for educational, moral and vocational development and that if father fail to bring up their children, especially the girls, it leads them to borrow traits and negative behaviours that are inimical to the societal morals.1.2 Statement of the Problem The most turbulent state of mortal development is agreeably the adolescent stage. The adolescent is characterized by identity extremity, aggressive, hostile and manifest destruction geste . This problem is related to father’s station and style in reaching out to the adolescent since it affects his confidence position in relating with people he comes through. When he becomes withdrawn, feels rejected, depressed and frustrated( Nwadinigwe, 2004). Begetting styles have correlation with the up bringing of their children. For case, fathers who borrow the I- do n’t- watch stations in nurturing their children especially the girl- children, will end up begetting children who are wayward, recalcitrant, rascal and maladjusted in the family and the immediate community or society. For case, a child( girl) whose father doesn’t meet up with her demands or introductory requirements may go out to meet her peers who would misadvice, misdirect and mislead her into joining a gang of sexual hookers or women of easy merits who use their bodies to get material effects they warrant at home. When fathers neglect to rear their children veritably well, it leads the girls to engage themselves befriending men, the contrary coitus who they feel will cover them like their fathers and give them what they warrant in fathers. This association could lead to promiscuity, adulterous coitus, unwanted gestation and revocation which accordingly lead to termination of life and career of the adolescent. It’s in this tone that Clinton( 1995) saw a father as a man stabilizing strong influence upon his children, furnishing means by which his children may face the outside world with confidence.1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is substantially to examine the influence of begetting styles on social adaptation among adolescents in Surulere LED, in Lagos State. Other specific ideal are 1. To determine whether begetting styles impact adolescents ’ social adaptation. 2. Examine the extent gender difference exists due to begetting styles. 3. To find out whether religion affect the begetting styles of parents. 4. Determine whether artistic impact on begetting styles affects the social adaptation of children. 5. To identify different types of begetting styles.1.4 exploration Questions The following questions were raised for the conduct of this study 1. Will begetting styles impact the early gestation of girls? 2. Does begetting styles impact adolescents social adaptation? 3. To what extent does gender difference in begetting style affect the academic achievement of the girl child? 4. Will religion affect the begetting styles of parents? 5. To what extent will artistic impact on begetting styles affect the social adaptation of adolescents? 6. How can we identify types of begetting styles?1.5 Research suppositions The following exploration suppositions were formulated to conduct this study 1. There’s no significant influence of begetting styles on social adaptation of adolescents. 2. There’s no significant impact of begetting styles on propensity to early gestation among womanish adolescents. 3. There’s no significant artistic impact of begetting styles on social adaptation of adolescents. 4. There’s no significant influence of religious impact on begetting style on social adaptation of adolescents.1.6 Significance of the Study The study will be significant in several ways therefore 1. Fathers This study will enable fathers to be more apprehensive of the fact that they need to gather their children, especially the girls veritably well so as to avoid adulterous sexual conditioning, gestation and revocation which may claim their lives. This study will help fathers to know the different patterns of rearing a child and to borrow the stylish pattern they suppose fit. 2. The Findings of this study will help adolescents, especially, girls to know that they need to be nurtured by their fathers and to come to terms with the fact that they could end up in getting maters if they re poorly brought up or nurtured by poor begetting style. 3. The findings and recommendations of this study would help preceptors who are themselves parents, to imbibe the culture of training their children wards veritably well, bringing them up in the normal way that could make them adaptive to normal systems of the society and to grow as responsible grown-ups. 4. Counsellors will see this study as reference material in that it’ll help them to use the recommendations in this study to help adolescents who have different problems as a result of being under the servitude of bad mothering. 5. Society will find the recommendation of this study as important in making them to draw conclusion on the stylish way of begetting a child. Also, scholars and neophytes in exploration will find this study a reference and applicable material in doing farther work on affiliated issues.1.7 compass of Study The study will cover the influence of begetting styles on social adaptation among adolescents in Surulere LED, of Lagos State.
