Preface

Before Nigeria came independent on October 1, I960, the nation went through a long period of social administration.

This, what’s moment known as Nigeria was actually a large vast of land conforming of colorful indigenous political systems. In the northern part of the country, there were the Hausa – Fulam Caliphate, the Kanem- Bornu Empire, the Nupe Empire system and a host of others. In the south were the Benin Kingdom, the Yoruba and/ or Oyo Empire, the Ibo acephalous society among others.

Before the series of admixture that followed the arrival of colonialism, there was formerly in the northern part a heretofore strong political association of the whole north effect to the 1804 Islamic Jihad of Uthman Dan Fodio. It was therefore well- organized northern Nigeria that the colonialist assessed their circular rule system.

The casual relationship between the social mind- set and Darwinism is disposed to Plato’s gospel of education and statecraft. For case, just as Plato calls for a class grounded education for a class structured society where individualities must aspire to remain in the interdicted class, the educational policy of the social state was also structured and intended.

Rather, it was against any form of education, Muslim and Christian likewise, not seared towards the consummation of the social state’s docket. Hence, the social state neither destroyed nor developed the Islamic education system, though it appropriated the artistic and socio- political morality of the Islamic faith it met in Nigeria to serve its interest. also, the social state neither destroyed the Christian operations in Nigeria nor spread them from condensation indeed though the state, to sustain itself, reckoned heavily on the services of the products of the Christian educational system. In place of both the Islamic and the Christian educational systems, the social state initiated a brainwashed system of education. It was brainwashed substantially because religion was made an accessory – commodity simply honored’ some what tardily’- rather than the gob of social state’s educational policy 2.

By the time Lord Lugard left Nigeria in 1918, the brainwashed educational policy of the social state and its antecedents, the Indirect Rule policy and the 1914 admixture of Nigeria, were formerly forcefully established. So too was the executive division of the country into three unstable groups of businesses. This was to the advantage of the favoured.

Islamic North in comparison with its Western and Eastern counterparts in the Christian South.

By themid-1930s and the 1940s the social system come forcefully consolidated. Given the largest minimum in contact between the different corridor of the country, especially between the North and the South. It wasn’t surprising that the social system spawned in the religious and socio- political life of the country enmity, dubitation and all feathers of divisive practices. For case in the North, the Northern indigenous Christian were perceived as posing political trouble to the Fulani- Islamic ascendance .

From the point of view of public politics, the colon o administration in the North, unlike that in the South, had congealed into what came to be known as the’ Northern Systems,, that’s the Anglo- Hausa- Fulani Islamic Hegemony.

The Governor, Sir Donald Cameron( 1931- 1935), in the trace of shift opposition from the Northern residers, was so unimpressed by the system that he described the Region as

The sacred North, a land piecemeal, suspended in place and time.( which). held up development in the Region and kept it in an fantastic reverse water, seductive to its

British defenders but administratively ineffective loose, and asleep to the requirements of its own peoples especially thenon-Muslim and non-Northerners3.

With the successful implantation and connection of the Northern system, Christian operations had to find away to survive in a hostile terrain part of their survival medium was to take over ecumenical meeting moreover to fight the restriction assessed on the operations by Indirect Rule Policy or to see earnings of concession with the social administration. This led to the establishment of the Northern Christian movement. With perceived passions of strength the charge decided to make to way into the political terrain like their Muslim counterparts.

serve it to say that numerous times after independence, religion has determined political palms and opinions in the Northern part of the country. The heat this has generated and attendant effect on the nation’s federalism stimulates intellectual disquisition similar as this.

Statement Of The Problem

Political pundits have always opined that political developments in Nigeria have literal and social under cascading’. This statement is an certain fact. The issue of the politicization in Northern Nigeria in particular and the nation in general is one of them. From the social days although the conformation of the Jamia Islamiya Mautaneen Arewa( JIMA) which was formed and led byDr.R.A.B. Dikko a Christian) which latterly came Northern People’s Congress and was commandeered by the Northern coven, religion has been politicized by politicians in Northern Nigeria to score political pretensions. This is because religion prayers to the emotion and psychology of the people and spurs colorful responses generally violent responses as seen in the colorful screams like the Sharia hoot that had to do with religion in Northern part of the country.

Religious screams have frequently hovered the foundation of Nigerian concinnity similar occasions have been followed by calls for the victims of similar screams to come back to their home, where they can not be assured of their protection and safety. This has counteraccusations public integration. There are clear suggestions that religion will in the near future play a dominant part in the election of appointment of political leaders from that part of the country.

What’s the effect of politicized religion on the nation’s federalism in general and Northern Nigeria in particular? This is what this design tends to unravel.

Objects Of The Study

1. To identify the immediate and remote causes of the politicization of religion in Northern Nigeria.

2. To identify the counteraccusations of this development oil painting the Nigerians federalism.

3. To examine to what extent this miracle has undermined public integration and concinnity in Nigeria.

4. To proffer possible result and make recommendation to government.

Exploration Suppositions

To guide this study, the following suppositions have been formulated for testing

1. That politicization of religion is likely to lead to schism.

2. The politicization of religion will undermine the principle of federalism.

3. Politicization of religion will affect in violentre-action in the Northern area of Nigeria.

Significance Of The Study

The significance of the study can not beover-emphasized, especially now that there’s a incipient republic and government is looking for ways to promoting effects that unite the country and discontinue those that tend to divide it.

The significance of this study is as follow

originally, it would give an sapience into the part that religious is playing in Nigeria politics.

Secondly, it’s hoped that the study would give the Nigerian leaders with enough information that will guide them in expression that will guide them in formulating programs in the areas of religion and the state.

Thirdly, the study will go a long way in changing the exposure of the people with respect to the negative perception of religion in politics. similar understanding it’s anticipated would help to engender the spirit of forbearance and accommodation among the people of different religion.
