Abstract

 

There are many machinery at the mechanical engineering department of the Institute of Management and Technology, but not all of them are in good condition.

 

The breakdown of the air conditioner suggests that this can be the result of insufficient maintenance. The quality and effusiveness of the material were well observed in the instance of machine maintenance. The expense of maintenance, which was reduced while still achieving highly effective repairs, was not forgotten either.

 

For so long, the right equipment, the cost, and the quality of the materials were carefully examined when making repairs and rehabilitations to a malfunctioning air conditioner.

1.1 Review Of The Literature

 

Heat is moved from a low-temperature area to a higher-temperature area through the process of air conditioning. The system then performs a negative net work. The compressor, condenser, metering device or thrilling valve, and evaporator are the four fundamental parts of an air conditioning system. The air conditioning system will perform poorly or not at all when one or more of these components is defective or damaged.

 

The damaged air conditioner was originally repaired as a project by a group of students in the department of mechanical engineering during the 2004–2005 academic year.

 

The following faults were specified before the crew began working on the air conditioner in the year 2005.

 

1. The compressor is not pumping any gas (refrigerant) into the system due to low pumping.

 

2. The compressor and fan’s capacitors need to be replaced.

 

3. Because of impurity obstruction, the dryer was unable to filter the gas that the compressor pumped.

 

4. Because the air conditioner had been abandoned for a very long time, the entire system was dirty.

 

The core of every air conditioning system is the compressor. It circulates refrigerant throughout the entire system.

 

A specific quality of refrigerant is metered by the expansion device or the metering device for each unit.

 

Most of these crucial air conditioner parts, which in this instance appear to be quite fragile, should not be handled roughly when a problem arises, and they should also not be handled by non-exports working in the refrigeration and air conditioning industries.

 

In the subject of air conditioning, the most recent team that worked on the project is categorized as a non-exporter. We say this because an air conditioning system that exhibits the aforementioned issues does not require maintenance as it previously required without replacing some of the parts with brand-new spares and the standard size, which is the size of the air conditioner machine.

 

For instance, we confirmed that a compressor with little pumping action was indeed a two horsepower (2 HP) compressor. This inadequately sized compressor only pumps a small amount of air conditioning equipment. Because the two horse power compressor’s capillaries are larger than those of a 1.5 horse power air conditioning unit.

 

Once more, the amount of air conditioning gas being pumped was far too small to achieve the needed cooling.

 

The capacitors, which were terrible and in no way good.

 

A new dryer was installed in lieu of the old one, which had become clogged with pollutants. As a result, inadequate refrigerant cycling is to blame. The air conditioner’s copper capillary, which we fixed by switching out the dryer for a new one. despite this, we can still be in good shape.

 

A piece of equipment that has been fixed and restored should be sound on the inside and out. Those who had previously worked in the air conditioner were unable to spray it because their work had left it with numerous scratches.

 

Sincerity be damned, poor maintenance was another factor that made a significant contribution to the air conditioner’s breakdown.

 

The maintenance of a plant’s ability to function safely. Planned preventative maintenance and breakdown maintenance are the two basic categories of plant maintenance.

 

This report advises the series of tasks to be completed in order to arrive at a meaningful solution to the issue.

First, we followed the fundamental steps for locating a fault, such as sealing leaks with soap solution and using a vacuum pump to flush the condenser, which showed the drier (filter) as the source of the problem. The compressor was tested; there was no malfunction other than the fact that it had a 1.5 horsepower (hp) size and that it had previously been opened and welded, which is not a good idea.

 

Following the replacement of the plug that supplies electricity to the system, the general clean up of all dust-compacted parts was carried out without any issues.
