THE ROLE OF UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CYBERCRIMES AMONG STUDENTS (A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

One of the terms commonly used in today’s culture is “cybercrime.” To understand the definition of cybercrime, one must first understand the definitions of cyber and crime. The term “cyber” is a prefix used to represent a concept associated with the computer and information eras, whereas “crime” is defined as any action that violates legal procedure and is typically carried out by people with a criminal intent. Cybercrime is defined as an offense committed against a person or a group of people with the intent of destroying the victim’s reputation or inflicting bodily or mental harm on the victim, either directly or indirectly, through the use of modern telecommunication networks such as the internet and mobile phones (Haider & Jaishankar, 2011). The truth  It is not a far-fetched explanation for the rise in cybercrime that they have easy access to Android phones, tablets, laptops, the internet, and network infrastructure. Such crimes have the potential to jeopardize a country’s security and financial well-being (Saul, 2007). Cybercrime is defined as any crime committed using a computer system. Despite the fact that the internet has provided many venues for important research, cybercrime is a global issue that costs governments billions of dollars. In Nigeria, cybercrime appears to be committed by people of all ages, from young to old, though the young appear to be the primary offenders in recent instances. According to Akpan (2016), cybercrime has caused Nigerian students to seek money in ways other than through university education. Several young people are involved in cybercrime.

with the goal of becoming the best hacker or for profit, as hacking tools have become more affordable in our current society. According to Ngozi (2016), the rate at which Nigerian youth are involved in some form of cybercrime is concerning. Because cybercrime has the potential to devastate the image and reputation of businesses, institutions, and individuals, it is critical to investigate the role of University Management in the fight against cybercrime among University of Ilorin students.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

University education’s primary goal is to prepare students for future careers. Graduates today and tomorrow must be able to seek out information and be technologically savvy in order to thrive in today’s world.

In today’s fast-paced, high-tech world. These students must be computer and information literacy literate. The methods for acquiring this literacy must be integrated into learning programs and the educational experiences of students.

However, few undergraduates at Nigerian universities and other higher learning institutions are likely to be aware of cybercrime, which is defined as criminal activity carried out using a computer system, while many more are likely to be unaware. Some of them may have participated in, if not masterminded, such a crime. Some Nigerians, particularly undergraduates, including those in Kwara state, regularly engage in cybercrime. Such behavior is associated with a number of obvious problems. As a result of their naivety, cybercrime victims suffer severe emotional and psychological distress. as a result of being duped out of their hard-earned money by con artists who may be their own children or relatives. There have been suicides linked to cybercrime. This is especially true when victims believe their entire life has been snatched from them due to massive financial and investment losses. Perpetrators are occasionally apprehended, arrested, charged, and sentenced to life in prison. Parents of detected victims are frequently killed because they are unable to cope with the shame and pain associated with their children’s or wards’ involvement in cybercrime. Furthermore, the prevalence of cybercrime taints a country’s international reputation. It may also jeopardize the security and financial stability of a country. Students are now having fun defrauding public and private organizations.

while pursuing their academic goals, as well as their peers. If this anomaly is not addressed and corrected as soon as possible, our higher education institutions will become a breeding ground for crooks looking to defraud the school administration and society at large. The purpose of this research is to determine the involvement of university administration in the fight against cybercrime among students at the University of Ilorin.
