THE TRENDS IN STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN JUNIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Abstract

There have been many instances recently of students performing poorly in geography on most external exams. Concerned by this pattern of events, the researchers conducted a thorough analysis into the factors affecting students’ academic performance in geography at secondary schools in the Nigerian municipality of Calabar. From ten secondary schools, 411 senior secondary two geography students were chosen at random. The researchers meticulously gathered information on the variables, including sex, age, and attitude toward geography, using questionnaires and student academic success tests. Data analysis methods included independent t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).The analysis of the data revealed that the three student characteristics of sex, age, and attitude significantly affect students’ academic achievement in geography. It was suggested that in order for students to perform better in school, the government and school officials should take into account assisting students in achieving functional academic accomplishment while they are still young. (ANOVA) was used to analyze the data.
