Assessment Of School Environment On Student Academic Achievement In West African Senior Secondary School (WASSCE)

Chapter One

Preface

Background to the Study

There’s no denying that education is critical to any nation’s social, political, and profitable progress. This is why utmost countries seek to devote a significant quantum of their Gross National Income on educational development. In Nigeria, education accounts for between7.6 and9.9 of total periodic expenditure( Durosaro, 2003). The proportion allocated in the approved public budget is intended to finance construction and recreating academy expenditures. The physical structures, which are capital ferocious, account for the maturity of the cost, and the physical terrain of a academy adds a great deal of value to the academy( Obong, 2007).

At her study, Egim( 2003) discovered that the physical terrain has an impact on the director’s part performance in the academy, either appreciatively or negatively. structures, classrooms, Cabinetworks, outfit, educational accoutrements , laboratories, libraries, and play fields are all part of the academy’s physical terrain. Walls, machines, ornamental objects, play fields, ice rinks, swimming pools, and audio-visual outfit are among the others( Mckay, 1964 in Egim, 2003). According to Egim( 2003), in order to extend the educational enterprise, educational itineraries are more concerned with enterprises similar as the number of seminaries, preceptors, and scholars’ infrastructural installations similar as classrooms and academy structures. The terrain’s quality receives little attention( Obong. 2010).

The physical appearance of the educational terrain is critical in promoting healthy academic exercise. It serves as the pivot around which all other conditioning revolve. This is because it produces a internal terrain conducive to literacy. The complexity of establishing and administering a academy terrain while taking certain rudiments into account is enormous; one of these parameters is the academy position. The position of a academy can greatly impact a pupil’s internal stability for academic preparedness.

A academy deposited along an air- business path, on the side of a road( particularly without a hedge), near artificial exertion, commerce, and so on will be a nuisance and intrude with the children’ literacy process. It’ll make enough noise to abstract from the literacy adventure. School supervision and sanitation, according to the National preceptors’ Institute( NTI, 2008; Mckay, 1964 in Egim, 2003). These have the eventuality to impact the quality of the literacy terrain. This refers to all of the measures used by a academy system to manage waste( noise, water, and other backwaters), drainage patterns, and academy structure. Greening the educational terrain is also critical. According to Sanitation Connection(2001/2002), a academy administration that offers sanitation and planting of flowers, trees, and maintaining meadows, well cleared meadows, and so on improves the quality of life and study terrain. Another part of academy operation is the aesthetics of the academy terrain. Regular oil and conservation of erecting quality, sewage channeling, well- planned geography and flower trouncing, junking of meadows, proper disposal of scrap, sweeping and barring nonentity webs, and other conditioning give a comforting terrain for mind molding. All of the challenges described over are exemplifications of academy environmental operation results that could transfigure a academy into a place where scholars want to stay.

Despite this critical top- of- mind issue, nearly little has been done to manage academy surroundings for salutary academic bid. It’s vital to take over exploration on the tactics used in Nigerian secondary seminaries to manage the academy terrain.

Statement of the Problem

There has been important debate about the academic performance of Nigerian secondary academy scholars. scholars’ dismal performance, particularly in the elderly Secondary Certificate Examination, has surely advanced validity to this study. Academic performance and scholars’ success in the elderly Secondary Certificate Examination is therefore a recreating subject, which is generally bandied both outside and outdoors of academic circles. Grounded on the antedating, this study investigates the conception of academic performance in relation to scholars’ backgrounds, learning coffers, and academic achievement. utmost secondary seminaries have a significant chance of scholars that perform veritably inadequately in WAEC and NECO due to scholars’ objectiveness in education, a lack of professional preceptors, lazy preceptors, and a lack of tutoring and literacy installations and outfit. It’s well known that each position of education, as well as the subject being tutored, has its own set of pretensions andobjectives. However, particularly those of tutoring and literacy in elderly secondary seminaries, are to be met, If the pretensions and objects of education.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of academy terrain have on scholars ’ academic achievement in West African Senior School Certificate Examination( WASSCE) in named elderly secondary seminaries in Surulere, Lagos State. Specifically, this study will;

1. Examine available literacy installations in elderly Secondary seminaries

2. Find out the influence of available installations on scholars academic performance in WASSCE

3. Assess impact of School physical terrain on scholars ’ academic performance in elderly secondary academy

4. Identify if academy installations effectively used aid tutoring and literacy in secondary seminaries

Exploration Hypotheses

The following suppositions are tested in this study

H0 Available academy installations won’t significantly impact secondary academy scholars ’ station towards literacy.

ii. H0 School installations won’t significantly impact the performance of scholars in West African Senior School Certificate Examination( WASSCE).

iii. H0 School terrain installations won’t significantly impact academic achievement in secondary seminaries.

iv. H0 School installations aren’t effectively used aid tutoring and literacy in Secondary seminaries.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this exploration is to examine and determine the impact of the academy terrain and installations on the academic performance of secondary academy pupils. The study’s findings will help preceptors understand the significance of perfecting tutoring and literacy aids. The study’s findings will also help educationists and policymakers in developing programs that will help academy directors in creating conducive and enabling surroundings able of developing, promoting, and enhancing positive and effective tutoring and literacy for scholars in secondary seminaries.

Compass Of Study

Because no single study can cover all aspects of the subject, the experimenter intends to concentrate on the relationship between academy installations, academy atmosphere, and performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination. The study focuses substantially on secondary seminaries in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi state.
