Effect Of Environmental Degradation On Agricultural Productivity In Nigeria

Chapter One

Preface

Background Of Study

Environmental declination has come important global issues since the 1970s, when the world countries and transnational community came apprehensive of the negative consequences ofover-exploitation of the mortal terrain. Environmental declination in utmost pastoral areas in Nigeria has increased over the times and both mortal conditioning and natural disasters have contributed to this problem( Titiola 1998; Girigiri 2000).

Prominent environmental declination set up in utmost pastoral communities include- deforestation, loss of biodiversity, loss of soil fertility, filtering of the soil, land declination, land and water pollution, desertification, flood tide, failure, and attritions. The oil painting companies have been criticized as the perpetrators of environmental declination in this region due to overexploitation of the crude oil painting deposits and gas glaring. Be it as it may, complete evaluation of environmental declination should consider the part other factors similar as poverty and hamstrung resource use in husbandry have played in limiting achievement of effective environmental protection and operation in poverty prone communities.

The terrain affects our health in a variety of ways. The commerce between mortal health and the terrain has been considerably studied and environmental pitfalls have been proven to significantly impact mortal health, either directly by exposing people to dangerous agents, or laterally, by dismembering life- sustaining ecosystems( Remoundou and Koundouri, 2009).

Environmental declination is the deterioration of the terrain through reduction of natural coffers similar as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extermination of wildlife. It’s any change or disturbance to the terrain perceived to be injurious or undesirable. Environmental declination is one of the Ten pitfalls officially advised by the High position trouble Panel of the United Nations. The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reductiondefines environmental declination as “ The reduction of the capacity of the terrain to meet social and ecological objects, and needs ”.

The primary cause of environmental declination is mortal disturbance. The degree of the environmental impact varies with the cause, the niche, and the shops and creatures that inhabit it. Humans and their conditioning are a major source of environmental declination. Worldwide the topmost goods on the health of individualities and populations affect from environmental declination and social injustice. The two operate in consort.

Martin Donohoe, 2003). Causes include overpopulation, air and water pollution, deforestation, global warming, unsustainable agrarian and fishing practices, overconsumption( affluenza) misdistribution of wealth, the rise of the pot, the Third World debt extremity, and demilitarization and wars.

Mining is also a destructive development exertion where ecology suffers at the balcony of frugality. Scientific mining operations accompanied by ecological restoration and rejuvenescence of booby-trapped wastelands and judicious use of geological coffers, with hunt foreco-friendly backups and druthers must give sensational disclosure to the impact of mining on mortal ecosystem( Singh and Chauhan, 2010).

Statement Of The Problem

Environmental declination is the gradational reduction of the terrain that’s able of damaging a whole lot of effects including creatures and cropland and ranch produce. The problem of environmental declination on agrarian productivity could be that the knowledge or idea on how to go about the control of this natural disaster that tends to destroy agrarian yield. Eventually, several inquiries have been carried out on the environmental declination but not indeed a single exploration has been carried out on the effect of environmental declination on agrarian productivity in Nigeria.

Points And Objects Of Study

The main end of the study is to determine the effect of environmental declination on agrarian productivity in Nigeria. Other specific objects of the study include

1. to determine the extent to which environmental declination affects agrarian productivity in Nigeria.

2. to determine the factors affecting environmental declination.

3. to determine the profitable significance of environmental declination on agrarian yield.

4. to proffer possible results to the problems.

Exploration Questions

1. What’s the extent to which environmental declination affects agrarian productivity in Nigeria?

2. What are the factors affecting environmental declination?

3. What’s the profitable significance of environmental declination on agrarian yield?

4. What are the possible results to the problems?

Statement Of Research Hypothesis

H0 Environmental declination has no significant effect on agrarian productivity in Nigeria.

H1 Environmental declination has a significant effect on agrarian productivity in Nigeria.

Significance Of Study

The study on the effect of environmental declination on agrarian product will be of immense benefit to the entire growers in Nigeria in the sense that it’ll enable private individualities and the government to take preventative measures to the annihilation environmental declination might bring to the ranch yield. Eventually, the study will contribute to the body of being literature and knowledge to this field of studies and base for farther exploration.

Compass Of Study

The study on the effect of environmental declination on agrarian productivity is limited to subsistence and marketable faming in Nigeria.

LIMITATION OF STUDY

fiscal constraint-inadequate fund tends to stymie the effectiveness of the experimenter in sourcing for the applicable accoutrements , literature or information and in the process of data collection( internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The experimenter will contemporaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This accordingly will cut down on the time devoted for the exploration work.

Description Of Terms

Effecta change which is a result or consequence of an action or other cause.

Environmental DegradationThis is the deterioration of the terrain through reduction of coffers similar as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems; niche destruction; the extermination of wildlife; and pollution.

Agricultural Productivity is measured as the rate of agrarian labors to agrarian inputs.
