Abstract

This exploration work is to find out the effect of strike action on the academic performance of scholars in some named secondary academy in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. To negotiate the objects of this exploration, a questionnaire was drawn for one hundred and fifty scholars named in the area of study. The findings of this exploration revealed that.

1. Strike is caused by irregularities of preceptors payment.

2. Indiscipline of scholars in colorful seminaries

3. Lack of dialogue between Government and Nigerian Union of preceptors.

All these affect to strike conduct, the effect of this strike conduct is generally dropped in performance of scholars academic in secondary academy, in the times that are strike free. This study linked the fact that patient strike leads to low moral in both scholars and preceptors. The ensuing recommendations and suggestions according to the exploration, if taken will reduce or completely exclude strike.

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

This design attempts to examine the effect of strike on the academic performance of seminaries in Nigeria at large and OredoL.G.A. of Edo State in particular. The secondary academy community is composed of numerous staff unions; strike by any of these unions has a tendency of lowering the standard of education.

In this work, attention will be paid to the impact of Nigeria Union of schoolteacher( NUT) strike action on pupil’s academic performance. This is primary because NUT performs the original functions of inculcating knowledge on Nigeria secondary seminaries scholars. The experimenter will also examine the goods NUT strike has on the quality and standard of academy leavers produced from secondary seminaries.

A study of this nature is necessary because education has the universal function of contributing to the performance of societies by transmitting ideals, values and morals from generation to generation thereby preparing the youth for active part in the society. Education also displays the value conflicts that live between ideals and real morals that are typical of all societies.

Fafunwa( 1994) in recantation of the below data stated that an ideal educational medium should be suitable to help the heirs, develop the capacities, station and others forms of geste which are positive value to the society in which they live. Aristotle( 1988) also honored the necessary function of education, which he stated in his book that the points of education should include;

a. The consummations of the capabilities and eventuality of individualities

b. The development of the body

c. The training of the favors which is character or moral development

d. The development of the intellect or reason. He further hold that non of the below should be emphasized at the expenditure of the others

In line with the below points and functions of education, the Nigeria government in its 1981 policy on education are the structure;

3. A United, strong and tone- reliant nation

4. A great and dynamic frugality

5. A land full of bright and full occasion for all citizens

Presently, education in Nigeria has not been suitable to achieve the noble ideal because it’s in deep problems. Paramount among these problems is the ceaseless NUT strike, which has frequently disintegrated academic conditioning. numerous reasons can be seen responsible for these ceaseless strikes by the NUT. Prominent among those problems according to NUT are those of backing, lacks of autonomy and dehumanizing working conditions in trying to find a continuing result to these problems, the long commission set up by the civil government recommended in their report a 90 backing position for coming fifteen times 1992- 2007.

These recommendations were espoused in the agreement between the civil government of Nigeria and the NUT unfortunately government reneged on the agreement. As a result of this, utmost preceptors left for the private sectors while some others went to private seminaries in hunt of greener ranges. Some pupil’s aesthetics to crime, while others also secured temporary employments and yet others get involve in road peddling and came juvenile delinquents. The consequence of these strike action has led to a condition fall in education standard.

The conflict between the civil government and preceptors has been being intermittently in some state secondary seminaries following from this, it becomes material that a lasting results be formed through a comprehensive exploration on the effect of strike on the academic standard of scholars. This work intends to do this by drawing government attention to the colorful way to be taken in order to exclude these problems formerly and for all.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
