Geographical Information Retrieval System (GIRS)

Chapter One

Preface

Background Of Study

According to Chang,K.T.( 2008), Geographic Information Retrieval System( GIRS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, dissect, manage and present all types of geographical data. The acronym GIRS is occasionally used for geographical information wisdom or geospatial information a study which refers to the academic discipline or career of working with geographic information system. In simplest terms GIRS is the coupling of cartography, statistical analysis and database technology.

A geographical information reclamation system can be allowed of as a system which digitally creates and manipulates spatial areas that may be jurisdictional, purpose or operation- acquainted. Generally, a GIRS can be custom-made designed for an association. Hence, a Civilians developed for an operation governance, enterprise or purpose may not be inescapably interoperable or compatible with a GIRS that has been developed for some other operation, governance, enterprise or purpose. What goes beyond a GIRS is a spatial structure, a conception that has no similar restrictive boundaries.

In general sense, the term GIRS describes any information system that integrates, stores, edits, analyzes, shares and displays geographic information for informed decision timber. GIRS operations are tools that allow druggies to produce interactive queries( stoner – created quests), dissect spatial information, edit data in charts and present the result of all these operations. Geographic information wisdom is the wisdom underpinning geographic generalities, operations and systems.

The link between terrain and information technology can’t to a veritably large extent be over- emphasized.

Using Enugu State tourism board as a case study has helped to give a comprehensive understanding of the significance and the need of a geographic information system, as it’s believed, information technology has a significant part in geographic information system and high position of prospects would and is formerly being demanded from its use both in Nigeria and the world at large.

Statement Of The Problem

In our diurnal lives as humans, utmost of our trials involve moving from one position to another for one thing or the other. A problem emerges when there’s no proper direction or a system as to give accurate direction in locating our destination, what the said destination contains and what’s has to offer. This is the problem the state has as concerning tourism, whereby a good number of excursionists

( most especially excursionists visiting for the veritably first time) and other individualities wanting to visit sightseer spots in the state but can not do so because of the lack of a well detailed system to give them( excursionists) with an accurate geographic information system as to how to detect these spots within the state.

Due to the lack of an accurate geographic information reclamation system as far as tourism is concerned, most excursionists are discouraged from exploring these sightseer locales within the state, this in turn hampers the positive impact that tourism is meant to have on the development in the state and the Nigerian society at large.

Objects Of The Study

1. To examine the living/ current system in respects to how geographic information for tourism is handed for excursionists in and outside the state.

2. To ameliorate on the formerly being system by designing a geographic information reclamation system that’s well detailed and fluently accessible.

3. This study also seeks to help in broadening the compass of tourism in the state through furnishing a comprehensive geographic information reclamation system.

Significance Of The Study

The significance of this study is to show that a link between terrain and other professions can be created on the platform of information technology. i.e. to show

that with information technology the problem of position can and is answered to a veritably large extent.

Compass Of Study

The compass of this study is limited to sightseer locales and hospices within the state using the Enugu state tourism board as a case study in view of furnishing/ perfecting on the being geographic information system of the board for tourism in the state.

Limitations Of The Study

Time was a major constraint faced during the exploration for this design work and limited the trouble in developing a much more comprehensive package demanded in the design and perpetration of the geographic information reclamation system.

Description Of Terms

Geography: Geography is a wisdom that deals with the distribution and arrangement of all rudiments of the earth ‟ s face. The word terrain was espoused in the 200s BC by the Greek Scholar Eratosthenes and means „ earth description. ‟

Information System: An information system can be defined technically as a set of interrelated factors that collect( or recoup), process, store and distribute information to support decision timber and control in an association.

Geographic Information Reclamation System; A “ geographic information system ”( GIRS) is a computer- grounded tool that allows you to produce, manipulate, dissect, store and display information grounded on its position

Position: The position, point or sitting of notoriety or commodity.

Chart: A diagrammatic delineation of commodity similar as a route or area made to show the position or how to get there.

Tourism: Travel to profit from a particular service or exertion that’s unapproachable at home.

Computer: An electronic device that can accept data/ information inform of input, process the data information in order to produce an affair and also has the capability to store the information for unborn use.

Data: Data refers to raw or undressed information.

Software: This is the logically written instruction that controls the operations of the tackle.

Tackle: This is the physical factors of computer system and other geographic tools or bias.

Database: This is the collection of affiliated data information stored substantially in a central position.

Computer Backed Design( CAD): Software programs for the design, drafting and donation of plates. Firstly designed for manufacturing and delineation, now also extensively used for mapping.

Operating System: A series of computer programs which control the operations of the computer itself. operation programs similar as Civilians software run under an operating system. exemplifications of operating system include UNIX, VMS, DOSetc.
