Impact Of School Environment On Students’ Pyschosocial Development And Academic Performance: A Case Study Of Secondary School Students In Ikeja Local Government

Abstract

Among the predictors of scholars ’ academic performance and psychosocial development is the degree of comfortability and conduciveness of academy terrain. The study examined the impact of academy terrain on scholars ’ academic performance and psychosocial development in Nigeria using a case study of secondary scholars in Ikeja Local Government. The check design in collaboration with the intentional slice fashion was used to elect 120 secondary academy scholars from 10 named secondary seminaries in the study area. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire, which was administered to the repliers. The data attained was subordinated to descriptive statistic ways and the ki- squared analysis. The results revealed that physical academy terrain; academy position and academy installations significantly told the academic performance of the named scholars. Also, academy terrain, in its wholeness significantly impacted on the position of scholars ’ psychosocial development. Grounded on these findings, the study recommends that ultramodern and functional educational installations similar as libraries, laboratories, ICT centers, health centers, sport centers, toiletries and other educational accoutrements should be handed and made accessible to the scholars and preceptors should be friendly and gracious towards their scholars so that they- the scholars, can consult them whenever they’ve any disturbing issue( s).

Preface

Education is largely imperative to all countries of the world anyhow of their position of development. Education is the process of transmitting knowledge, chops, data, judgmentetc. either formally or informally. It’s the channel through which mortal, physical, social, emotional and intellectual capacities are exercised. Education to Kneller( 2000) is the process by which individualities go through seminaries, sodalities, universities and other institutions of learning for transmission of values and knowledge.

Education in the submission of the 1st black chairman of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, is the most potent armament to fight poverty, ignorance and provoke positive reforms in the world. Quality education allows for accession of chops, technological advancement and creates an avenue for the disquisition of mortal coffers towards the attainment of profitable development.

School terrain is a conception that goes beyond the physical position of a academy; it covers the schoolteacher- pupil relationship, aesthetic structure of classrooms, libraries, laboratories, quality of preceptors, tutoring styles, etc, which are pivotal in the process of tutoring and literacy. These rudiments of academy terrain affect the academic performance of scholars( Ajao, 2001). The extent to which pupil literacy is propelled is at the mercy of the position of the academy emulsion, vacuity of educational accoutrements and classroom structure. It has been widely agreed among scholars that seminaries with conducive terrain for the conditioning of tutoring and literacy will produce positive results of education that will speed up effective tutoring- learning community, education liberation and the academic performance of the scholars.

The physical features of a academy have strong influence on scholars ’ performance and the station of their preceptors in assiduously discharging their duties. In a situation where a academy terrain is faced with imminence similar as poor lighting, poor ventilation system, dilapidated installations, high noise position, high discharge of poisonous substances, high pupil- schoolteacher rate etc, the process of tutoring and literacy will be delicate, which will ultimately produce poor academic performance of the scholars.( Ajayi, 2004). The combination of uncomfortable work place for preceptors and poor state of academy installations generates stress and job dissatisfaction among preceptors. In headway, it’ll also results in inertia and demotivation among the scholars.

In addition to these, the structure of a academy terrain influences the position of psychosocial development of the scholars. The description of “ psychosocial ” according to the American Psychiatric Association( APA) is the combination of cerebral and social factors that determines the internal stability of an existent. Social influence like peer pressure, religious belief, tone- regard, family background, stress, hospitality, depression, forlornness, socialization, style of maternal parenting, family- child relationship and interpersonal relationship helps to shape the personality and cerebral makeup of individualities. scholars with psychosocial insufficiency will surely have difficulty to serve in social events and may have challenges in communicating effectively to others( Asoquo & Kalu, 2015).

The intimidating rate of woeful academic performance among scholars in Nigeria has been of important concern to preceptors, parents, government and the scholars themselves. The quality of education isn’t only dependent on the number and qualifications of preceptors, but on the position and collaboration of academy terrain, because the academy terrain is an essential area that should be well- managed to attain advanced pupil academic performance.

Statement Of Problem

All seminaries in Nigeria are positioned at colorful places by private individualities, government, commercial and religious associations. therefore, the process of tutoring and literacy takes place under different terrain.

Every academy owns different kind of installations and classroom structures at varying effectiveness position. All scholars are anticipated to sit for the same examination at the final time of either their inferior or elderly secondary academy education( Inferior Secondary School Certificate Examination at inferior position and Senior School Certificate Examination at elderly position). Livery academic performance is also anticipated to be achieved among the scholars since they were tutored with analogous syllabus and class.

In reality, some scholars in some seminaries perform better than their counterparts in other seminaries. This indicates there are peculiar determinants that impact the success or failure of scholars in examinations. A particular illustration of similar determinants is the academy terrain. scholars tutored in a conducive terrain tend to perform better than their peers tutored in an uncomfortable terrain. To this end, it’s apt to examine the impact of academy terrain on the academic performance of scholars and on their psychosocial development.

Objects Of The Study

The main ideal of the study is to examine the impact of academy terrain on scholars ’ academic performance and psychosocial development in Nigeria using a case study of secondary scholars in Ikeja original government area of Lagos state.

The specific objects of the study are

To ascertain the extent to which the quality of physical academy terrain affects scholars ’ academic performance.

To assess the extent to which academy position affects scholars ’ academic performance.

To find out the extent to which academy installations and accoutrements affects scholars ’ academic performance.

To explore the extent to which academy terrain influences scholars ’ psychosocial development by considering factors like peer pressure, tone- regard, depression and parenthood style.

It’ll help them appreciate the fact good academy installations and outfit stimulates scholars ’ academic performance. It’ll also help the preceptors in the areas of their classroom delivery, tutoring effectiveness and increased productivity.

The results of the study will help the government and policymakers to formulate effective planning programs and programmes to foster seminaries ’ academic conditioning. It’ll also give policymakers with knowledge to identify and break the requirements of the seminaries in terms of structure and installations.

Incipiently, it’ll prop experimenters in their unborn exploration undertakings in the aspect of academy terrain, scholars ’ academic performance and their psychosocial development.

Compass And Limitation Of The Study

The study attempts to cover the impact of academy terrain on scholars ’ academic performance and psychosocial development by prioritizing on secondary academy scholars in Ikeja original government area of Lagos state.

The limitations faced in the study are time and fiscal constraint. The time given to conduct a study in terms of its vast nature is fairly small, coupled with other academic commitment of the experimenter. Also, due to limited finances, the study only covers one original government out of the 774 original government areas in Nigeria.

nonetheless, a robust and fact- chancing exploration was carried out.

Plan Of The Study

The study is divided into five chapters.

Chapter one is the introductory aspect of the study that consists of the general preface, problem statement, exploration objects, questions and suppositions that attendants the study.
