Chapter One

Preface

Background of the study

Participation in politics is a veritably important factor for the popular progress of any society. It’s a abecedarian prerequisite of popular quality. immaculately, republic aims to save and promote the quality and abecedarian rights of the existent, achieve social justice, foster profitable and social development of the community, strengthen the cohesion of society, and enhance public tranquility(Inter-Parliamentary Union, 1997). Accordingly, when people share in decision timber within a political reality, governments are more effectively held responsible, naturally guaranteed rights are executed, and individual and community demands are better represented within the policy process. Participation in politics therefore ensures the consummation of popular objects within a political reality. A strong and effective original government is one of the most inimical rudiments for icing quality good governance and strengthening original government bodies. The original representatives of original bodies grounded on popular ideas can promote the lesser socio- profitable liberation of the people of the country, and this largely depends on the maximum application of citizens, both men and women, for its overall development. In Ghana, though women comprise further than half of the total population, the status of women is much lower than men in every sector of the frugality. Republic around the world make special vittles to promote women’s participation and reduce walls to their meaningful participation. With there-emergence of conservative trends, the commanded participation of women in original governments could be an important vehicle for driving change in the country’s political geography. The participation of women in original government is critical for the legitimization of decision timber processes. When women share in original government, it enhances the legality of the government, ensures fair representation of society in tagged services, and impacts the policy docket by strengthening the capability of women to deal with affiliated issues in society( Markham, 2013). The issue of women’s participation in original government is as important mortal rights centric as matters of political rights. Every existent has the right to share in decision timber processes that define his or her life. When women share inversely with men in original government, it ensures that the womanish perspective is effectively incorporated into policy opinions. Encyclopedically, there have been major trends of women’s rejection from politics. This is as a result of” multiple structural, functional, and particular factors that vary in different social surrounds across countries. From the original to the global position, women face several obstacles to sharing in political processes. Structural walls, through discriminative laws and institutions, and capacity gaps like lack of education, connections, and coffers, have led to the under representation of women as choosers, as well as in leading positions(UN-Women,n.d). In Ghana, the lack of gender analysis in the Ghanaian frugality and the unnoticeable part of women in Ghana, in particular, have a literal connection with the gap in women’s participation in original governance. therefore, the premise upon which the study is accepted.

Statement of the Problem

Over the times, there have been a number of sweats and programmes to enhance women’s participation in original politics, especially in the developing world. Ghana has not been an exception owing to the multitudinous advocacy and capacity structure conditioning that have been acclimatized towards perfecting womanish participation. But as a matter of fact, we need to first know what the true conditions of women in original areas or at thesub-national situations are before any meaningful interventions can be made. utmost women in Africa still live and work in conditions under which they’re treated as bare instruments of product and social reduplication. Their status and rights are, in numerous felicitations, indeed more marginalized than women away in the world, who, indeed if they’re vanquished to patriarchy, suffer it largely within the confines of the ménage. This may not be the entire dilemma facing women. Since we can’t know without chancing out, I believe a study of this nature may explore other issues related to women’s representation, offer some suggestions and exfoliate further light on the subject matter. either, there has been an over attention on women as a total without regard to the special problems that are peculiar to women from different corridor of the country. We may not get a nay picture of the issue of women’s participation if we put all of them in one ‘ big pot ’ and treat them as though their circumstances were exactly the same. maybe, we could appreciate the different situations of women in Ghana by an assessment of George Orwell’s popular statement about all creatures being equal, indeed though some are more equal than others. That’s why this study will be looking into the issue of women’s participation in both the Northern and Southern corridor of Ghana with a view to chancing differences through comparisons and the reasons underpinning the differences regarding the number of women in the assemblies.
