NEED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY MATERIALS FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to determine the need for environmentally friendly materials for building construction. The survey population consisted primarily of large construction companies in Anambra State, where he had more than five years of active construction experience. The sample for this study consisted of 10 reputable construction companies drawn by simple random sampling. Four research questions and two hypotheses were developed to guide the study. A 30-item structured questionnaire was developed for data collection. We used counts/percentages and weighted means (Likert scales) to answer the survey questions, and chi-square to test hypotheses at the 0.05 significance level. Among other things, it turns out that contaminated building materials have a serious negative impact on the environment. Above all, urgent attention is needed to protect the environment from global warming and other adverse effects. Based on the findings and conclusions, recommendations were made to the Anambra State Government to enact legislation that would contribute to the effective use of environmentally friendly materials in building construction in Anambra State.

1.0 Introduction
1.1 Research background
In recent years, more and more attention has been focused on the environmental impact of building materials. Rising energy and raw material costs are forcing the construction industry to consider alternatives such as renewable energy sources, raw materials and waste reduction. Climate change and environmental pressures are key drivers for promoting eco-friendly materials.
In addition, this trend is spreading rapidly, and international documents regarding the environment have been published. Kyoto Protocol, EU Building Energy Performance Directive, Energy Efficiency Directive. In line with the demand for environmentally friendly materials, some governments are changing laws and setting sustainability goals for public and residential buildings. On the other hand, statistics show that the choice of building materials is an important factor in the well-being of residents, and “unhealthy” materials not only cause environmental problems, but can also cause asthma and cancer, so they are very important. is. Choose low-emission building materials. We spend most of our time indoors and building materials affect the “health” and safety of our indoor environment.
The construction industry in Anambra is changing rapidly. New building materials are constantly being introduced, new building techniques are being developed, and increasingly sophisticated designs are being developed for constructing the next generation of buildings in anticipation of their energy. Efficient and sustainable building materials. The first step towards eco-friendly buildings is the correct selection of building materials. This is a difficult task that this study seeks to explore in order to determine the environmental impact of selected materials prior to the design and construction stages.
