Positioning Nigerian Lobster Farming For Significant Expansion And Increased Productivity

Chapter One

Preface

Background To The Study

marketable lobster husbandry is getting veritably popular day by day and it’s a veritably profitable business( Beveridge, 1996). Among all the largely- priced marine crustacean, lobsters are larger in size. A mature lobster weights between 250 to 400 grams. Lobster husbandry with complaint or other fish species is veritably profitable and easy. It’s accessible to start lobster husbandry business by cultivating only lobsters in a pond or with other fish species like tilapia or clarias garepinus etc( Hill, 1999). still, this study will examine how lobster husbandry in Nigeria can be deposited for significant expansion and increased productivity. To insure significant expansion of Nigerian lobster husbandry, the pond operation for lobster husbandry should done well. The pond, where the lobster will be cultivated needs further oxygen than usual. named pond must have to be suitable enough for changing constantly. So, it’ll be better if the pond is named near a swash or conduit. Doing this will insure constant watersupply. However, also there’s need to setup a tube well for nonstop water force, If any source of natural water like swash or conduit isn’t available. Sandy soil is better for lobster husbandry. insure sufficient vacuity of the sun light. It would be better if there are no big trees near the reinforcement of pond. The area or size of the pond may be any depending on the product type. But it would be better, if the pond is constructed over at least one acre of land. The depth of the pond must be between 1 to1.5 miter( Jolly & Clonts, 1993).

There are multitudinous lobster species available. Among those species that are profitable for husbandry are adik- adik, bamboo and barracuda lobsters( Vo, 2006). Because these species grow briskly and have huge demand and price in the original and transnational request. This three species are different from each other like their name. The adik- adik lobsters are of sanguine black in color. Bamboo lobsters have banded legs and it’s seems like bamboos. On the other hand barracuda lobsters have spotted legs( FAO, 2010). Any of these types can be chosen depending on the position and asked product type to insure increased productivity. The high target of the lobster husbandry proponents in Nigeria, as in other developing countries where lobster monoculture has been rehearsed for decades now, is the readily high- bone transnational lobster requests that live for it( Allsopp, 2008).

Seventy per cent of Nigerians is estimated to be living below poverty periphery( UNDP 2006) and hardly could they be suitable go to land expensive seafood. also, over 70 of trawled lobsters in Nigeria are exported. Nigeria’s fish demand was estimated to be1.7 million metric tons in 2005, with original inventories of 500,000 mmt, while importation reckoned for 700,000 mmt leaving a deficiency of about 500,000 mmt( Areola 2007). Given the below wide- gap between fish demand and force, the wisest option, at least for now, is to roll out lobster product schemes that will assure protein security of the populace, and reduce the vulnerability of changeable import inventories. still, from all the affiliated issues in the husbandry of lobster, it’s important for government to support lobster growers in the area of finances and credit installations as lobster husbandry is a capital ferocious adventure. Government of Nigeria need to take cognizance of the environmental consequence of lobster husbandry are sizeable quantum of nitrogenous waste are produced by lobsters.

Statement Of The Problem

Lobster monoculture discharges nitrogen into water and may lead to serious environmental impacts. Especially, ferocious pen culture operations can lead to over carrying capacity of the pond water, and affect in fish kills, not only farmed stocks but also wild stocks in case of ocean or marine civilization of lobster. also, accumulation of inordinate quantities of nutrients from uneaten feed and excreta of dressed fish impacts the culture terrain, tending to induce the situations of ammonia, indeed poisonous hydrogen sulphide. These can hang the stock so that easy fall in complaint or death. In avoiding the rise of the miracle, growers have high requirements to use veterinary medicines and chemicals for their forestallment and treatment. These may lead to numerous problems associated with food safety and terrain. All these are considered has factors that can limit the expansion and the productivity position in lobster husbandry. still, the experimenter is examining the approaches towards situating Nigerian lobster husbandry for significant expansion and increased productivity.

Objects Of The Study

The following are the objects of this study

1. To estimate the position of growers involvement in lobster husbandry in Nigeria.

2. To examine the approaches towards situating Nigerian lobster husbandry for significant expansion and increased productivity.

3. To identify the limitations to the expansion and increased productivity in lobster husbandry in Nigeria.

Exploration Questions

1. What’s the position of growers involvement in lobster husbandry in Nigeria?

2. What are the approaches towards situating Nigerian lobster husbandry for significant expansion and increased productivity?

3. What are the limitations to the expansion and increased productivity in lobster husbandry in Nigeria?

Significance Of The Study

The following are the significance of this study

1. The result from this study will reveal the position of lobster husbandry in Nigeria and its donation to the public frugality. It’ll also educate on the approaches towards situating Nigerian lobster husbandry for significant expansion and increased productivity with careful consideration of its limitations and the environmental impact.

2. This exploration will be a donation to the body of literature in the area of the effect of personality particularity on pupil’s academic performance, thereby constituting the empirical literature for unborn exploration in the subject area.

Compass/ Limitations Of The Study

This study will cover the position of participation of Nigerian growers in lobster husbandry with a view of situating it for significant expansion and increased productivity.

Limitation Of Study

Financial constraint-inadequate fund tends to stymie the effectiveness of the experimenter in sourcing for the applicable accoutrements , literature or information and in the process of data collection( internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The experimenter will contemporaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This accordingly will cut down on the time devoted for the exploration work.
