CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Self-discipline and self-esteem are two character traits that are essential for excellent leadership. They are important components in displaying a prestigious and effective relationship in formal and casual settings, as well as completing tasks or projects. Self-discipline and self-esteem are critical in a formal organization like the military, where regulations are in place to instill leadership skills that are necessary for a successful military career. The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna is a military university in Nigeria.  In performing their constitutional obligations, these officers are expected to maintain the highest level of discipline and self-esteem. The institution’s program consists of four years of academics and one year of military training. The college was founded in 1964 to train the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force officer corps. Self-esteem, according to Smith and Mackie (2007), is the positive or negative appraisals of oneself, and it is what one thinks about oneself. It shows a person’s entire subjective emotional assessment of their own value. It refers to one’s attitude toward oneself. Self-discipline, on the other hand, is the practice of restraint, perseverance, thoughtfulness, and the ability to succeed. It is this quality that keeps a person from engaging in unhealthy, excessive activities that can have bad consequences. Self-discipline is the demonstration of inner strength and power, which is essential for conquering daily challenges. It is not a limited lifestyle, nor is it difficult to achieve, as some people may believe. It is a personality attribute that prevents indecision and procrastination. It is the ability to manage one’s own fate, take action, and remain steadfast. Moderation, patience, tolerance, understanding, and consideration are all attributes of self-discipline. It refers to one’s ability to tolerate external pressures. The goal of the research is to assess the relationship between self-discipline and self-esteem. (A case study of chosen Nigeria Defense Academy Kaduna cadets.)

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The institution, regulation, and leadership upon which the nation is formed and functions determine the challenge of nation formation, development, and expansion. The Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) in Kaduna is a crucial institution that produces the nation’s leaders. As a result, it is critical for the institution to produce leaders with extraordinary abilities who are capable of leading the country in the proper direction to support development, growth, and increased capability. The Nigerian military is based on strong leadership ideals that must be passed down from generation to generation. Self-discipline and self-esteem are important attributes that are thought to improve the formation of extraordinary leadership abilities in Nigerian defense academy officers.  According to Smith and Mackie (2007), self-esteem is defined as positive or negative self-evaluations; it is what we believe about ourselves. It shows a person’s entire subjective emotional assessment of their own value. It refers to one’s attitude toward oneself. Self-discipline, on the other hand, is the practice of restraint, endurance, thoughtfulness, and the ability to achieve in the face of adversity. It is the ability to make decisions, apply self-discipline, and work diligently to attain desired outcomes. Self-discipline allows a person to renounce immediate pleasure in exchange for something more lasting and rewarding. It is this quality that keeps a person from engaging in unhealthy, excessive activities that can have bad consequences. The act of self-discipline is a demonstration of inner strength and power.
