CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Drug abuse is defined as a pattern of drug or substance consumption in which the consumer consumes the substance in quantities or in ways that are detrimental to themselves or others. D. Nutt, L. A. King, W. Saulsbury, and C. Blakemore (2007). When a person is under the influence of a drug, the ensuing outcome is criminal or anti-social behavior. Other side effects could indicate physical, social, or psychological harm. The National Drug Law Enforcement Body (NDLEA) is the Nigerian agency in charge of putting an end to the drug war. Following an increase in the number of drug-related convictions in Nigeria, the drug war has become a major burden for the country. The agency’s goal is to abolish the production, processing, and distribution of marijuana. Nigerians are responsible for a large portion of the heroin trade in the United States, as well as the smuggling of cocaine from America to Europe and Africa. They’re also involved in marijuana cultivation and exportation from Nigeria to other West African and European countries. As a result, the rate of drug trafficking in Nigeria necessitates immediate action to eliminate the threat. According to a study of frequent drug trafficking arrests in British airports, Nigeria accounted for 65 percent of heroin seizures weighing 50 grams or more, and Nigeria served as a transit point for 20 percent of all heroines originating in the Southwest Asia region. According to the report, 20 percent of the hard drug cases in the United Kingdom were brought in by way of the internet.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

This is attributable to the country’s growing drug trafficking problem. According to accounts of drug trafficking and drug conviction cases in other countries, a large number of those involved are Nigerians, and many have been imprisoned as a result of their crimes. The Nigerian law enforcement agency was established with the mission of arresting, investigating, and prosecuting drug trafficking offenses. In some instances, they are
