The Effect Of Polygamy On The Academic Performance Of Pupils A Case Study Of Some Selected Primary School In Ughelli North Local Government Area Of Delta State

Chapter One

Introduction

History of The Study

In 850 various cultures around the world, polygamy—an expanded family study based on marriage between a husband and two or more women—is frequently recognized and practiced.

Over the past 20 years, the public’s political and academic understanding of polygamy has substantially increased. This kind of marriage structure affects the behavioral, emotional, and academic adjustment of children.

The compelling evidence that a student’s familial background has an impact on their academic abilities is actively being highlighted by psychologists and educators. It is frequently held that the types of families a student comes from or belongs to have an impact on their academic success.

Authorities and educational institutions are aware of how polygamy affects pupils’ academic performance. This is done so that the child’s behavior both inside and outside of the classroom can be observed by parents and teachers.

There are many problems with students’ academic performance in Nigeria today since it hasn’t been molded and mastered from the start. This is a result of both the poor quality of instruction provided in classrooms and the profound effects that a child’s upbringing and/or familial environment have on the students.

The familial environment of a student, according to Dempsey et al, had a major impact on their academic success. In a research on how parenting styles and family dynamics affect the academic performance of Nigerian pupils. The scholastic achievement of students from single-parent families and those from two-parent households differs noticeably, according to Uwaifo (2008). Uwaifo (2008) also made the point that when a student is enrolled in classes, the school is in charge of the events that mold that person’s life. Indeed, a child’s personality and upbringing have a significant impact on who he becomes. Particularly in the case of parental involvement. Additionally, due to some negative circumstances at home, a few of pupils have been unable to read at their best level for academic purposes. Inadequate nourishment, poor health, an unattractive environment, a lousy housing and financial condition, and lack of student interest are a few of these. Unmet physical and emotional needs for school may cause students to consistently perform below grade level, which could have an effect on their entire development. Poor academic performance during the school years frequently has negative effects for their population, including a higher rate of school dropouts, behavioral problems, and even crime.

As a result, this study examines the effects of polygamy on kids’ academic performance using Ugelle Primary School as a case study. Polygamous homes are more likely to have more children than those with only one parent. Parents in polygamous households are consequently less concerned in monitoring their children’s academic achievement. To close the gap between these families, parents should devote more of their time to their kids’ care by providing them with academic essentials such textbooks, a good food, writing supplies, etc. and less time to their business or other interests. The government’s top priority should be to provide its people with access to high-quality education. All pupils from monogamous, polygamous, and single-parent families should have access to suitable facilities and resources in schools. The family has a strong social and primary impact on a child’s capacity for learning. The type of family structure and the parents’ educational backgrounds have a considerable impact on how children develop, especially in third-world nations. A family is a group of people who are related through marriage or blood, and it serves as the basis for a child’s growth. In a large family, a child may not receive the full attention they require, particularly if they are struggling academically. Because they are in charge of multiple children, the parent may not find it convenient to deal with homework, school fees, parent teacher organizations, and many other concerns.

When a man marries two or more women simultaneously, it often results in jealousy, unequal treatment of the children, and the survival of the fittest, which can be bad for a child’s scholastic achievement. Children in polygamous households must compete for the few resources and parental affection that are available. Since the family is the child’s primary educational environment, the house has an impact on the child’s lifestyle, diet, and outlook on life. The type of family environment to which the child is exposed greatly affects his academic success in school. In a manner similar to how parental rejection and insecurity appear to be the root causes of lying, truancy, and other adolescent delinquent actions like stealing.

A Narrative Of The Problem

The study will make an effort to respond to some of these queries by providing answers.

(1) What are the effects of polygamy on both individuals and societies?

(2) What specific effects does polygamy have in the Ughelli North Local Government community in Delta State?

(3) In what ways might these problems be solved? Polygamy has a significant negative effect on students’ academic performance, especially when adequate diet and supervision are absent.

Objective Of The Study

This study uses Ugelle Primary School as a case study to examine how polygamy affects kids’ academic performance.

In addition, this research aims to clarify the following

(1) the connection between family size and student academic performance

(2) The behavioral effects of polygamous households on children

(3) The study emphasizes how a child’s academic progress is impacted by parental participation and discipline.

(4) Another objective of this study is to compare or highlight the academic success of kids from monogamous and polygamous families.

The Need For The Study

This project effort is extremely important since it will demonstrate how polygamy has affected students. The benefit to society as a whole is that this will help parents and the school administration promote affection, love, and the supply of security and acceptance to the pupils. In addition, this study will offer individuals guidance on the kind of family they should form, and educators claim that the curriculum will be created to benefit children from such homes. More particularly, an experiment would be conducted to find out how polygamy impacts kids’ academic performance.

Purpose Of The Study

The research project investigates the effects of polygamy on the academic performance of children at Ughelle Primary School in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The report also discusses how teachers and parents can encourage academic success in kids. The study investigates the academic performance of kids in polygamous and single-parent households. Researchers, psychologists, and educators are also asked for their perspectives on the impact these variables and family size have on pupils’ academic achievement. In polygamous households, the study also investigates the link between parental education and the scholastic success of their offspring.

Research Questions

(1) Is a student’s academic success influenced by their parents’ financial situation?

(2) Does the number of spouses in a household affect a student’s academic success?

(3) How do polygamous-upbringing students do academically?

(4) Does a child’s academic success depend on how much their parents love and care for them?

(5) Does a student’s ability to provide for their fundamental needs at home have an effect on how well they do in school?
