The Effect Rate Of Fertilizer Application On Vegetable (Telfairia Occidentalis)

ABSTRACT

Field trials were conducted at the Imopoly farmFarm, Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo in 2014 to determine the effect rate of toxin operation on vegetable( telfairiaoccidentalis). The treatments involved nine toxin types videlicet; Aleshinloye grade A, Aleshinloye grade B, Sunshine grade A, Sunshine grade B, Pace setter grade A, Pace setter grade B, Neem compost,. Abraded pumpkin served as the test crop. The toxin types were applied at two situations each( 0 and 60 kg. N ha- 1). The treatments were assigned into a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Data were collected on growth parameters, nutritive composition and yield attributes of abraded pumpkin. The parameters assessed were significantly told ( P<0.05) by the applied toxin types. The loftiest vine length, number of leaves, nutritive composition, fresh shoots and seed yields were recorded at 60 kg. N- 1 irrespective of the toxin types. Although, the stylish performance of abraded pumpkin in terms of growth and fresh shoot yield were attained from neem compost toxin type, this was similar with results attained with tithonia compost. The loftiest P(0.83), K(0.82), Mg(3.20), Ca(0.48), Fe(4.63) and protein(4.60 mg/ kg) contents of abraded pumpkin shoot were attained from the shops under flesh ordure treatment while shops entering no toxin operation recorded the least values for all nutritive attributes assessed. Neem compost(86.1 kg/ ha) nearly followed by tithonia compost(62.7 kg/ ha) gave loftiest seed yield of abraded pumpkin as compared to other toxin types. Although, neem compost and flesh ordure gave the stylish performance in terms of yield and nutritive composition independently, there’s no significant difference between the values attained from these treatments and that recorded from tithonia compost. In conclusion, the growth, nutritive composition and yield of abraded pumpkin were bettered by toxin types.

Chapter One

Preface

In Africa indigenous vegetables remain popular in pastoral areas where they’re frequently considered to be more nutritional than fantastic vegetables.Telfairiaoccidentalis generally called abraded pumpkin is an important splint and seed vegetable indigenous to Southern Nigeria and grown in the timber zone of west and central Africa( Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone being the major directors). It presumably began in south east Nigeria and distributed by Igbos who have been cultivated this crop since time old.

The splint is of high nutritive, medicinal and artificial values rich in protein( 29), fat( 18) and minerals and vitamins( 20). The nutritive value of pumpkin seeds is different from that of leaves. The protein contents of seeds and leaves are20.5 g and2.9 g, independently( 5). Seeds have high nutritive and spicy values which make it necessary in diets. Abraded pumpkin is of original ethnobotanical significance in the myth, salutary and cropping systems of Igbos. The position of iron is the factor for use of the splint birth as blood alcohol which can be administered to weak case.

Nitrogen is generally credited with the structure up of splint apkins. This is one of the essential rudiments most generally used to increase crop yield. It’s a element of all protein and chlorophyll. Factory towel, generally contains further nitrogen than any other nutrients. Nitrogen operation is used to produce rapid-fire vegetative growth of vegetables. It promotes luxuriant growth, and increases number of leaves. These encourage photosynthesis and partitioning of photosynthesis rate into the profitable corridor of the factory. It’s also necessary for reduplication andpromotes the uptake of phosphorus and potassium by shops. still, nitrogen demand for vegetable is 50 kg N/ ha or further in savannah zone of Nigeria( 8). It has been reported that 100 kg N ha is suitable for vegetable grounded on binary purposes( splint fruit). The recommended rate for the product of abraded pumpkin is 16okgN ha.

In Nigeria, growers realize the need for soil emendations by using available coffers similar as crop wastes, cropland ordure and flesh waste( 10). The use of organic toxin as source of nutrients to crops has lately entered comprehensive review by Awodun,; Akanbi etal. and Ojetayo et al. This toxin type improves soil’s physical, chemical and natural conditions, which in turns ameliorate crop growing terrain and crown in the better product of profitable factory corridor.

Organic toxin fortified with inorganic accoutrements especially formulated to replenish the soil and ameliorate factory fertilization. It releases nutrients in soil in the form that plants can fluently absorb, it’ll spark soilmicro-organism and increase microbes, which will help corruption process of organic matter and transfigure them into nutrients that shops can fluently absorb. This will promote advanced factory growth, healthier crops and better fruit yield. It reduces the requirements of chemical toxin, which will lead to lower product cost and laterally increases income. Organic crops contained advanced situations of 21 essential nutrients than their conventionally grown counter corridor including iron, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamin c. The organic crops also contained lower situations of nitrates, which can be poisonous to body.

Although, numerous exploration conditioning have reported better performance of crops with toxin operation one of the system through which shops would display its implicit inheritable capability is by supplying the shops with acceptable quantum and types of toxin at the right time. Research sweats are thus needed to recommend toxin types for sustainable product of TelfairiaoccidentalisinUmuagwo, the Guinea Savanna zone of south west Nigeria.

Statement Of The Problem

According to Jariene, the seeds contain about 50 fats, roughly 30 protein, sugar, B vitamins, ascorbic acid, Phytosteroles, Phytin, lecithin, oxycerotine, tyrosine, salicylic acid, and resins. The seed oil painting is also rich in glycerides of linoleic, oleinic, palmitin, and stearine acids. Omega- 3 adipose acid was set up to be present in pumpkin seeds; it helps to help artheriosclerosis, high blood pressure, and heart conditions; it also stimulates metabolism of accumulated fats. oil painting- cutlet fats from pumpkin seeds contain large quantities of( nearly 60) of omega- 3 acids doubly that of cod liver oil painting. Pumpkin seed greasepaint is used in China and the United States as an component of salad dressings and in baked products. The seed oil painting is used as salad oil painting in Europe, and in India for cuisine and lighting. The seed is used medicinally in the forestallment of order monuments. Seeds are eaten as an anthelmintic. In Mauritius an infusion of the seeds is used internally to treat hypertension and prostate complaints and externally to treat erysipelas.

Seeds form a major part of the diet of Nigerians; They’re consumed as a mess as well as constituents of original mists. In southwestern Nigeria, pumpkin seeds are used locally as an volition to “ egusi ” melon( Citrullus vulgaris Schrad) seed. Melon seeds are mulled and used to prepare the popular “ egusi ” haze where they act as food thickeners. Pumpkin seeds are used alone or in combination with lush vegetable.
