The Problem And Its Setting

Preface

“ Communication is at the heart of all social intercourse ” – Amadou M’BOW( 19808). Television Communication has now grown to a planetary compass “ TV is extensively admit to be a important medium of our age ”,( Television JournalVol.III, 1985). It was introduced for nation development. In some cases it was introduced previous to independence by social governments to command and control social conditioning and civilization especially in the developing and underdeveloped countries. numerous homes and institutions have set up it compelling to posses radio and TV sets.

The Cinema, which used to be popular for foreign flicks now belongs to another age. TV in this present time, has come popular and it’s a more accessible volition to the social custom of going to the cinema. TV has affect social change by really abetting fashion, taste and social commerce.

Over the times, there has been a considerable debate over the influence of TV on children. Children are the most fleetly changing member of any society. They’re constantly rejecting the ways, morals and values of the aged generation and are quick in reconsidering them to suit their own values and styles. Yemi Faroubi,( 1986)Ex-general director, Nigerian Television Authority, Ibadan, says Nigerian TV Started as a necessary emulation of TV in other countries. He state that in some TV stations, Nineteen times agone , one would have allowed that one was within the demesne of the British Broadcasting Corporation. This he explained was due to the parallels of titles, the letters they wrote, the Language they used and the titles of programmes which were so much like those of foreign stations. He aids that, in the advanced world, TV is needed to maintain a middle of the road position, to hold a glass to the society, to reflect what it looks like and noway to impact what the society should look like. These foreign programmes have been concertedly linked along with certain original programmes as accustoming Nigerian youths and children. This is apparent in their mode of dressing, behavioural patterns and indeed in the way they relate to their elders.

Children are set up imitating TV icons like Michael Jackson, Ron Kenoly and Comando. These days children stay to watch TV after nine 0 ’ timepiece when they should be in bed. This denotes that they watch programmes which isn’t meant for them. They watch late night pictures and learn effects meant for grown-ups.

The main end of the preface of TV into media system of Nigeria was for an effective dispersion of information, entertainment and also to punctuate and save African trades and culture.

Children get their introductory values and language from seeing and hearing what grown-ups do and say to them and around them. They acquire capability and tone confidence from them, not only with interested people but also with concrete accoutrements similar as toys, paper, blocks and Natural objects in their terrain.

TV thus plays an important part in the lives of children, they spend important time with the TV and so learn much from the medium, that totalities up the reasons for the Federal Government and the Directors of the Nigeria TV stations, why they took pains of spelling out reasonable, educating programmes for children. One of similar programmes is the educational TV and the end of this programme type as stated in the Nigerian TV text 1981 are as follows

· To inculcate religious and moral values

· To inculcate discipline and respect for authority

· To encourage spirit of fellowship

· To help discover and encourage structure of bents

· To produce mindfulness in craft and educate how to make them.

Despite the fact that educational TV should help educate the children veritably many children learn or profit from educational TV programmes. Let’s take a brief look at AKBC- TV Channel 45, Television programming.

TV Programming

The programmes department is a veritably important arm of the TV outfit. Before now and until lately in AKBC it was one of the biggest departments, comprising the ensuing sections.

Programmes proper( directors) product services collaborative and donation( MCs). moment the department consists of only the directors and presenters – the image makers of the station, through them the different programmes are produced and conducted for transmission. thus, the sole end of the department is to carry out the triadic functions of broadcasting by educating, informing and entertaining the different orders of observers with their colorful programmes.

The programmes on AKBC – television, Uyo are grouped into the following types public enlightenment, educational, current affairs, entertainment, children, women, youth and family, religion and ethics, the trades, sports, News, drama and gospel, government and politics.

There are three sources of programmes in AKBC Channel 45, Uyo, the National programmes which provides programmes on the creation of peace and concinnity, patronage of Nigerian culture and programmes on education.

The state programmes which provides for the discussion of the life and culture of the people and their opinion of National affairs.

The original programmes which provides discussion of Original Matters, story telling, folk- tales, original music, burial advertisement and lectures on husbandry.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Indeed, there’s a need to embark on the exploration of this nature when one considers the absorbing influence of TV on the Nigerian Youths. Directors of TV drama are veritably careless in the way they handle coitus on TV. In the absence of community norms, we show no restrain in the way we present coitus in our entertainment programmes for case, in glamour girls. A child is introduced to the world of love too beforehand in life. obscenity, profanity, soil and roughness are common in both our original drama and foreign flicks and other entertainment programmes. Cigarette smoking and the use of liquor are frequently depicted in a manner to impress the Youth of our country as a desirable habit good of reproduction. This study hopes to offer recommendations that may help to correct these social ills.

Also in the educational sector, the knowledge therefore presented and a concentrated daily by the colorful media of communication is in the nature of “ Mosaic ” which no longer corresponds to traditional intellectual orders. The precedence is given to the dispersion of trivial or sensational news, adding “ noise ” at the cost of the real communication. In addition, mass communication tends to strengthen and enrich our common emblematic system, expressed and interpreted in new ways.

likewise, this study is justified because no given exploration has yet been conducted among the residers of Akwa Ibom State to discover the influence of TV on the secondary academy scholars whether negative or positive effect.

Grounded on the responses in Uyo residers to certain TV programmes, recommendations are made in order to help this deceiving foundations, erected in Nigerian children and also the need to save African culture.

Delimitation Of The Study

The study centred on the impact of TV on secondary academy scholars. The work is limited to secondary academy scholars whose periods range from 10- 18 times. This range was chosen because by the age of 10, an average child is suitable to answer questions and express his/ her opinion rightly. Also, by the age of 10, the impact of the TV if any, should be made manifested in a child’s life. The upper limit of 18 reflects the age of a youthful person or a youth beyond this age, he’s an grown-up.

The work is limited to Akwa Ibom State and Secondary School scholars and specifically Uyo megalopolis because about 50 of Uyo residers have access to TV programmes.

Another reason for limiting my work to this area is to be suitable to control certain variables similar as reaching repliers tête-à-tête to explain certain generalities on the questionnaire to their understanding. Also the people in Uyo megalopolis are adequately exposed to TV signals and dispatches.
