The Perceived Effectiveness Of Punishment Administered On Students By Secondary School Teachers

Abstract

The study estimated secondary academy preceptors ’ perception on the effectiveness of physical discipline as a correctional measure in named secondary seminaries in Ile- Ife, Osun State. This was with a view of exploring the goods of physical discipline in encouraging or discouraging secondary academy scholars from tardy and violent acts.

The quantitative data for the study was collected from 230 preceptors in 12 intentionally named secondary seminaries through simple arbitrary slice fashion. The quantitative data collected were analysed using descriptive and deducible statistics. The Qualitative data collected through In- depth Interviews and Focus Group conversations( FGD) were analysed using the TextBase Beta. The study revealed that there was no significant relationship( Fsup- val = .145, P ≤0.05, Xsup 2- val = .243, P ≤0.05, and tsup- val = .135, P ≤0.05 independently) between preceptors ’ demographic attributes similar as( age, position of education and coitus) and their perception. It was also revealed that schoolteacher’s length of service had no significant influence( Xsup 2- val = .713, P ≤0.05) on their perception. Also, there was a significant relationship( rsup- val.000, P ≤0.05) between preceptors ’ perception and frequent relinquishment of physical discipline. still, the Qualitative analysis showed the influence of religion on preceptors ’ perception,( King Solomon, in the Book of Proverbs( 1324)),( Proverbs 2215, KJV) and( Proverbs 2313, 15, KJV). In conclusion, physical discipline was perceived as an effective correctional measure for correcting and maintaining discipline among secondary academy scholars as well as, in molding and shaping their cognitive and psychosocial growth and experimental capability.

Preface

In Nigeria moment, acts of delinquency and violence among secondary academy scholars have come a major problem, which both the academy system and the society at large are contending with. These problems appear in form of destruction of academy and public parcels, cheating in examinations, drunkenness, medicine abuse and dependence , sexual offences, stealing, truancy, rudeness, fighting, bullying, verbal abuse, and defiance of constituted authorities, just to name a many. Accordingly, effective correctional ways are demanded to check similar negative conducts and to maintain discipline in secondary seminaries. still, the major issue that parents and preceptors should consider in relation to discipline is how the measures used can contribute to a high position of positive socialisation and character development in children.

Comforting Counteraccusations

The end of all forms of discipline of children must be to develop good characters in the form of social heart. The colorful correctional measures espoused by the seminaries are yet to achieve their points. frequently, secondary academy scholars are involved in cases of violence and delinquencies, which are reported by the media. These correctional measures are deficient either because they aren’t applicable or in the ways of their operation and administration. thus, this study involves an evaluation of the perception of secondary academy preceptors on the effectiveness of physical discipline as a correctional measure in named secondary seminaries in Ile- Ife, OsunState.Counselling Counteraccusations

Statement of the Problem

There’s no agreement of opinions about the goods of physical corrections on scholars. While a academy of allowed views it as dangerous and negative, another sees it as corrective and positive. still, at colorful times different forms of physical discipline have been espoused in secondary seminaries as correctional measures and yet, the justified ends aren’t generally achieved. Indeed the sweats of the families, the government and some stakeholders in the education assiduity towards controlling the negative andanti-social acts involved by secondary academy scholars haven’t yielded positive results.
