ABSTRACT

Nigeria is a multi ethnical and multi religious country and therefore there have been circumstance of ethnical-religious and political conflicts. Study of intergroup relation, similar as that of Kankia which portray peacefulco-existence amidst peoples with variations in artistic and religious backgrounds, is of high applicability in the country currently. This exploration thus, tried to study the part of Igbo and Yoruba settlers in the development of Kankia city, 1950- 2016. Grounded on the frame of drive and pull factors, the work examined the cases responsible for the agreement of settlers in Kankia, among which profitable factor was the most important. The study further examines the social and profitable conditioning of Igbo and Yoruba, their dominant part in certain marketable enterprises and their benefactions to the development of Kankia city. Also, the study discovered that, relations between the settlers and their hosts have, for long, been cordial. For the Yoruba settlers, for case, because of Islam as a factor, there have been cases ofinter-marriages with their Hausa host communities. The study also recommends that, peoples of the country generally and policy makers in particular need to learn from Kankia so as to promote peacefulco-existence among Nigerian communities for the betterment of all. This study was carried out, using primary and secondary sources.

Migratory communities, throughout the world, have been playing significant places in the development of societies. For case, the conditioning of settlers in different part of Africa contributed inre-shaping numerous societies and are viewed as major aspects of the history of Africa. thus mortal migration has been transubstantiating the aspect of ethnical and verbal composition of mortal population.1 Generally, scholars are of the view that migration is told by two important factors the drive and the pull factors.2 the drive factors include shortage, war and flooding. The pull factors on the other hand, attract settlers to settle in an area, similar as better socio- political and profitableatmosphere.According to Abdulkadir the circumstance of shortage and food deficit in some corridor of Nigeria in 1932, for case, served as drive factors to the migration of people to different corridor of Nigeria and beyond.3

This exploration is concerned with the migration and agreement of Yoruba and Igbo communities in Kankia city, 1950 – 2016. The Yoruba and Igbo came to Kankia city, in the alternate half of the 20th century, Igbo and Yoruba settlers were the predominant dealers in Kankia city in fact their agreement eased trade and other profitable conditioning in Kankia. This exploration is divided into five chapters. Chapter one gives the general background of the study. Chapter two examines the history of the area of study. Chapter three discusses the migration and agreement of Igbo and Yoruba settlers in Kankia city. Chapter four analyses the impact of Igbo and Yoruba in Kankia city. Chapter five provides summary and conclusion to the study.
