AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF TRUANCY ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is now widely regarded as one of the most universal means of ensuring one’s own survival as well as improving one’s own and society’s well-being. The introduction of formal education is frequently regarded as both the cornerstone of national growth and the most certain path to achieving all long-term goals and objectives. As a result, families and individuals, particularly teenagers and children, are emphasizing educational opportunities. There will be no effective impact or long-term success in a country’s daily operations unless citizens, officers, and workers are educated and understand their obligations, functions, and responsibilities. They will also follow the laws, implement policies, and participate in national affairs. to day operations. The 6-3-3-4 System of Education, which was established in 1982, aimed to provide universal basic education for citizens in order to breed species of individuals with compassion for our great Nation, National consciousness, and the right attitude toward life, properties, and values that would enable the country to progress to the next level of development (Ogbonna et al., 2009; Chinasa et al., 2009; Onwuchekwa et al., 2009). Despite the fact that the federal government of Nigeria has spent a significant amount of money and effort in the field of education, the results have been profitable and promising for the country’s progress over the years, providing reason for optimism for the future. Several factors have undoubtedly contributed to the slowing. down of the trend of rapid progress in education; absenteeism among students and teachers in elementary and secondary schools has been identified as a cankerworm in the educational system. This has raised a number of concerns in Nigerian secondary schools about the quality of instruction and educational system management. Thornberry and Huzinga (2000) (2000a). Furthermore, the consequences of truancy are obvious, and it is almost always detrimental to those who engage in it in their current and future educational lives. Truancy reduces intellectual growth as well as personal advancement. Furthermore, it leads to low academic achievement at the end of school periods, school terms, and the school year. When students fall shortIt is believed that not attending school will have a negative impact on their academic performance and thus the overall quality of their education. It reduces a child’s intellectual performance to a lower level than it was previously. It contributes to the deterioration of school educational standards. It increases the number of examination malpractices and unsatisfactory examination results, both internally and externally. The act of truancy during one’s school years is also a factor that leads to idealness, joblessness, and underemployment among the majority of people today. Nonetheless, the goal of this research is to investigate the actual actions, causes, and consequences of truancy in secondary schools, as well as as well as the effect of truancy on the academic achievements of those who are absent from these schools. Oehme and Franzke (2002) developed a formalized formalized formalized formalized formalized formalized formalized formalized formalized formalized formalized (Oehme and Franzke, 2002) Truancy is one of the most serious antisocial disciplinary issues that Nigerian secondary school students face. Researchers have focused on the concept of indiscipline as well as the actions of indiscipline. According to Peck’s findings (2003), a variety of behavioral disorders such as thieving, violence, drug abuse, examination malpractice, sexual abuse, and truancy have undermined effective teaching-learning processes to the point where some teachers have become helpless and disorganized in their task of imparting knowledge.

Students are given knowledge. Thornberry and Huzinga (2000) (2000a).

1.2Statement of the Issue

The school was established as a social agent to mold children’s habits, interests, attitudes, and sentiments, as well as to transmit social norms, culture, values, and traditions from one generation to the next. Despite this, some students continue to miss their classes (Oehme and Franzke, 2002). Many of our adolescents are now fleeing schools, despite the fact that their parents believe they are attending school lessons in many cases. When children are not in school, they have the opportunity to engage in a variety of juvenile delinquent activities such as fighting and drug use. This is a very worrying situation in our educational institutions. Truancy is a crime.

concern because children who are absent are unable to participate in the numerous programs offered by the school. According to reports, truancy has been linked to lower academic achievement as well as delinquent and criminal behavior. True, truancy is an important gear in the wheel of education and learning, as research has shown.

1.3 The Study’s Objectives

The overall goal of this study is to look into the causes and effects of truancy on the academic achievements of primary school students. Another goal is to:

i. To investigate the causes of truancy among primary school students.

ii. Determine the impact of truancy on primary school students’ academic achievement.

iii. To assess the impact of the peer group on the act

in primary school.

iv. To make recommendations on how to reduce truancy among primary school students.

1.4 Research Issues

i. What are the causes of truancy among primary school students?

ii. How does truancy affect primary school students’ academic achievement?

iii. Does the peer group influence truancy in primary school?

iv. What are the recommended methods for reducing truancy among primary school students?

1.6 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

It is hoped that the findings of this study will be useful to school administrators because they will examine the various causes and consequences of truancy and suggest ways to reduce it, which will serve as a vital tool for effective school administration.

The study will also provide information to parents.

on how or why their wards are truant. The study will also serve as a resource for students and researchers interested in conducting similar research of this magnitude.

1.7 The study’s scope and limitations

The research will look into the causes of truancy among primary school students. The research will also look into the impact of truancy on primary school students’ academic achievement. The study will look into the impact of peer pressure on truancy in primary school. Finally, the study will make recommendations on how to reduce truancy among primary school students. As a result, this study will be limited to Ekiti State.
