Satellite Television Channels Preference Among Youths

Chapter One

Preface

Background to the Study

With the revulsion of the world into a global vill through the adding complication of communication technologies, the original media in a nation is brought under fierce competition for original followership by the global media. What broadcasting does moment is to grease the process of globalization – “ a process that makes the world one massive total that’s naturally miscellaneous but with homogonous pretences brought about by the media, information and communication technologies, and mutually understanding people ”( Nwabueze, 2005,p. 7). When globalization narrows the space between people across the world, cult in a nation are faced with the choice of exposing themselves to contents of original or transnational media. The original cult especially in developing nations are converted into a global followership who find it delicate to leave the product quality and variety of programme content presented by satellite TV channels and watch original channels.

Mboho and Nwabueze( 2008) wrute that despite the perceived dependence on transnational broadcasting by the original followership, the original stations remain important and necessary in meeting some of the information needs in any given society. Research findings show that people who watch satellite TV stations depend on original stations for knowledge of what’s passing in their original terrain( Okoye, 2004; Nwabueze, 2010). This further buttresses the undying applicability of original media in the face of multitudinous satellite TV channels battling for followership attention. The world has been reduced into a global vill as a result of the emergence of Information and Communication Technology( ICT). Satellite boxes is one of similar technologies. It’s a ultramodern digital technology that makes us of computers to shoot vast quantum of digital information to al corridor of the globe. Satellite TV as a new distributing medium surfaced as a result of digital technology and the internet which has touched off a revolution in the way information is stored and transmitted which has permanently changed the media terrain. therefore, the traditional mass communication media( TV and radio) are floundering to manage with this drastic development.

moment, communication changes are moving briskly than ever ahead for the mass media diligence, this means increase cost, to replace old outfit, for consumers, this means a confusing array of products.

According to Bagi( 2007), therefore satellite signal are compressed in order to allow a lesser number of channels to be transmitted to and from an ringing satellite. To help people from entering the signals without a subscription. The signals are translated( climbed so that only those with a proper decoder can view them). The satellite receiver decrypts the signal and distributes them to one or further television sets. Dominick( 2009).

The multiple channels transmitted by satellite TV are substantially foreign programmes produced by the rich industrialized( developed) countries of the West and transmitted to the developing countries of South America Africa and Asia. Making these countries to come dependent. maybe Nigeria as a developing country has also depended on similar foreign programs and of course has been importing both hard and soft earthenware products containing similar programs; this has great consequences.

Nigeria is now passing artistic irruption, foreign culture has eroded the culture of the people and the effect is seen in the way we dress, talk and eat amongst because the entire tackle involved with television, has to be imported. KunczikM.( 1993).

It’s no account of this that this study is accepted to assess satellite TV channel preference among youths in( Nigeria) Mkpat EninL.G.A.

Statement of the Problem

Technologically advanced nations which initiate and bean satellite broadcast channels to the world principally their own interpretation or perception of the world to an transnational followership. Dominick( 2002,p. 462) observed that the United State of America “ dominates the transnational television programmes request ”.

Kotler and Armstrong( 2004) wrote that some critics that argue that globalization means Americanization because the further people around the world are exposed to American culture and life in the food they eat, the stores they protect, and TV shows and pictures they watch, the further they will their individual individualities. This buttresses the one- way inflow of satellite broadcast dispatches from the developed to the developing nations of the world. likewise, from the presumption over, it does appear that too important exposure to foreign programmes as vented by foreign satellite television stations could negatively affect followership artistic identity. But could it be said that Nigerians are exposed to further satellite television than original television? There’s still failure of empirical data on the position of exposure of Nigerians to foreign satellite TV channels, especially in relation to their consumption of original media content.

The transmission of foreign programs by satellite TV is having a lot of influence on the political, social and artistic institutions in Nigeria. The youth in this case are substantially affected since they more likely to copy western morals and value which they perceived to be more preferable to the indigenous culture. thus there’s the fear of propaganda and transmission of instigative material that can increase pressure domestically and internationally and the creation of artistic imperialism. It’s on this note that the exploration investigates the Satellite Television Channel Preference among youths, using the Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as a case study.

1. To assess the influence of satellite TV on the youths in Nigeria.

2. To find out the consequences of satellite TV programs on Nigerian youths

3. To find out whether why Nigerian youths prefer Satellite Television programmes to original TV programmes.

It’ll also try to proffer results to the being problems linked.
