5.0 Introduction

5.1 The Study’s Background

Corporate social responsibility is the acknowledgement that corporate operations have some impact on society as a whole and the taking into account of such impact when making business decisions. As a result, most businesses are aware of the negative effects that production operations have on the communities in which they operate. Some of the negative societal effects include degradation of the environment, displaced human habitation, and health risks. For instance, Shall Petroleum Development Company has been battling the unruly youth behavior in its region of business brought on by the actions of rival enterprises. Additionally, consumer production, including that of products and services, may have negative effects. Cigarettes and prescription medicines are two common examples. Businesses must inform customers about how to use their goods and services properly in order to avoid side effects.

Business organizations demonstrate their social responsibility to the areas where they operate by financing public works projects like paved roads, schools, and hospitals as well as by sponsoring local sports teams and cultural events.
