THE INFLUENCE OF THE PRINCIPAL’S POSITION SUPERVISION ON TEACHERS’ PERFORMANCE IN SOME SECONDARY SCHOOL

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The activities of teaching and learning at the school. The purpose of supervision is to improve the teaching and learning process for the ultimate benefit of the learner, who is the focal point of education (Adefemi, 2007). Similarly, supervision is fundamentally a leadership role, a type of superior-subordinate interaction in which a leader or officer trains, supervises, and corrects subordinates in order to improve effective performance. Effective and efficient school activities necessitate supervision so that educators can give their all in their many responsibilities and contribute significantly to developing learners capable of competing globally with their peers. Adelakun Adelakun, Adelakun Adelakun Adelakun Adelakun Adel (2005). Teacher supervision is the process of mobilizing and motivating subordinate personnel at a school to achieve the school’s goals and objectives. to the greatest extent possible. Supervision ensures that the right thing is done in school by guiding and monitoring teacher actions. In other words, certain explicitly assigned responsibilities will be subject to checks and balances. Education supervision, according to Key (2000), is “that term of school management that focuses primarily on the achievement of educational goals and objectives.” He goes on to say that supervision is an activity that entails leading, supporting, enhancing, and supervising teaching and learning in order to gain the cooperation of the teachers so that the supervisor can be effective in his supervisory duties (Zee, 2003). Most countries around the world have prioritized the development of educational excellence. This is because education has been identified as the key to long-term success.  closing the door to poverty and ignorance while also opening the door to success in terms of economic buoyancy, social development, and civilisation for any nation. Teachers are the instrument’s operators, while students may be viewed as the raw materials from which the changes would be realized over time, as education is recognized as a tool of change alongside the element of growth (Zak, 2001). However, because they are the main characters on stage, the participation of both the instructor and the students is critical and valuable to the educational system. Some external variables can interfere with the school’s plans and patterns of operation, the teacher’s personality, attitude toward work, motivation, discipline, student background, and environment, all during the teaching and learning process. All of which can have a positive or negative impact on the school system and its outcomes. The monitoring procedure is complex, and it pervades the entire school system (Carl, 2002). There appears to be little or no operation within the school that is not subject to monitoring, though this may vary in degree. Teachers have been accused of having divided loyalties, adopting a casual attitude, and engaging in indiscipline with their students (Carly, 1997). There is a constant comparison of the past and the present, especially when it comes to government or non-profit organizations or school inspectors. Parents are frequently dissatisfied with their children’s or wards’ inability to communicate effectively in languages other than their mother tongue. They thought that as a result of this,  The school system is rapidly losing its luster and orientation, which has an indirect impact on national educational goals achievement. These concerns must therefore critically examine the critical areas within the school system that require supervision, namely the instructional and discipline areas, where both the content method and mode of delivery, as well as the personality of both students and teachers, are evaluated to ensure their suitability for the school system (Ajibade, 1993). In a teaching and learning scenario, the children are the materials to be transformed. The people involved in the process of converting the child in school are the most academically qualified individuals assigned to work in this channel. Furthermore, qualified Master teachers are appointed as department heads in schools to coordinate the efforts of the teachers who teach their various disciplines (Shedrach, 1998). Benue State’s secondary school system has undergone a number of administrative changes. Secondary schools were once governed by volunteer organizations such as Baptists, Roman Catholics, Private Owners, and others in collaboration with the Local Education Authority. Secondary school principals were chosen at the time with the assistance of administrative aid from various organizations and the local education officer. At the moment, there are no university-wide norms and policies in place, and each volunteer organization has its own set of requirements (Levi, 2000). Because the educational system of a country is dependent on  The opportunity for principals to participate in the school’s teaching and learning format was insufficient because it did not allow for principals’ initiatives, which depended to a large extent on the qualities of its leaders. The principle has a significant impact on the type of adult that the children under his supervision will become (Paul, 2003). As a result, the principle must be aware of the qualities that are expected of him. Effective school supervision ensures that both human and non-human resources involved in the child’s processing are functioning properly and that all designated school workers’ actions are coordinated. Monitoring’s negative effects may cause the supervisor to become subjective rather than objective, and this supervision may cause both the The principal and teachers give their all to please the supervisor, only to retract their efforts at the end of supervision (Gloria, 2001). As a result, the school’s eye service performance improves. The challenge posed by the constantly changing school curriculum will be met by a thorough examination of secondary schools on a regular basis. It will also prevent the instillation of a poor curriculum in the minds of students, which, if allowed to be taught, would result in the promotion of “half naked” school leavers, who, rather than graduating as productive students, will graduate as liabilities to themselves and society in general, undermining the goals and purposes of education (John, 2002). The question of how to make the most of the educational system in the The educational system has faced a critical challenge in the face of decreased input. The question of how to make both the student and the instructor more productive has been a source of concern both within and outside of the educational system. Making the educational system more responsive to societal needs, both individually and collectively, has been a major concern for all citizens. However, once all resources are in place, it is necessary to monitor the educational system’s performance and make the best use of the materials or resources in order to get the most out of it. As a result, the most important tasks in the school are teaching and learning, which necessitate efficiency and effectiveness (Zak, 1994). The goal of this

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the principal’s position supervision on the performance of teachers in several secondary schools in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

The research is based on recent observations of teachers’ poor teaching performance in secondary schools, where teachers are free to do whatever they want. It is thought that a student’s performance reflects the teacher’s performance in the classroom (Gloria2001). The primary goal of this study is to examine the impact of principal supervision on teachers’ teaching performance. How effective is the Ministry of Education’s secondary school supervision position? And how all of these secondary school teachers are carrying out their duties.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this

The purpose of this research is to determine how teachers’ ability to perform effectively in a teaching-learning situation is influenced by supervision. The efficacy of a teacher’s approach to the student’s learning ability has been identified as one of the most significant elements that may impede a student’s academic performance in school. It is also critical to examine teachers’ supervisory functions and their outcomes in order to determine whether their supervision activities have contributed to their effectiveness in the classroom. The study will also look into how this teacher monitoring can be sustained over time in order to improve school activities, particularly in secondary schools.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The following question will be thoroughly considered.

i. How do we measure teaching success in terms of teaching and learning?

ii. What are the various types of supervisory jobs available in a secondary school?

iii. How can we motivate teachers to be more productive at their jobs?

iv. What factors limit a teacher’s ability to perform well during a teaching and learning exercise?

1.5 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

This research would be beneficial to the government, educational authorities, and school administrators. The findings would also emphasize the significance of supervision and its effects on teacher effectiveness. The number of people enrolled in secondary school in Nigeria has increased dramatically in recent years. As the number and population of secondary schools has grown, so has the demand for certified and untrained teachers. Finally, the research may help to revitalize the subject.

of declining educational standards as a result of bad management, which necessitates good organization and planning. As a result of the research, society will benefit and be able to make better use of the human and material resources available to schools in society.

1.6 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The study’s scope included a few selected public secondary schools in Benue State’s Guma Local Government. The study’s target group consists of the instructors and principals of these selected schools.

1.7 TERMS AND CONDITIONS

It is critical to provide operational definitions for the concepts or terms used in the research. The term includes the following:

INVESTIGATION: The act of carrying out research on a specific topic. That is, delving deeply into a subject.

SUPERVISION entails guiding and monitoring to ensure that the right thing is done. This entails acting as a check and balance for certain specific responsibilities.

TEACHER: Someone who teaches others something they did not previously know. The role of a teacher is to pass on their knowledge to others.

INFLUENCE: A long-term action that produces a result that is interesting enough to be noticed.

PERFORMANCE: A visible, observed, or felt action as a result of its effects on others.
