Background Of Study

Vocational/ specialized education are among the vital tools an existent can use to be developed. It’s a training for useful employment in trade, diligence, husbandry, business and home makingetc. the emphasis on vocation/ specialized; education is to prepare one for tone reliance. American vocational association( 1971) sees vocational subjects as those designed to develop chops, capacities, understanding, station, work habit and appreciation encompassing knowledge and information demanded any workers to enter and make progress in employment on a useful and productive base. It contributes to the product of good citizens by developing their physical, social, communal, artistic and profitable capabilities. The arrival of formal education in Nigeria neglect vocational and specialized education entirely. Despite all sweats made to fete it, yet little or no attention was given to it. No meaningful development was made in the area of vocational education until 1981, when the National policy on Education was published. Due to total neglect, vocational education suffered a major decline in quality, number, policy and directive in Nigeria due to the total neglect. It was after the oil painting smash period 1970s that it actualized on the nation that there was acute failure of professed force.

Osuala( 1999) emphasized that the term either specialized or vocational education has no single widely accepted description but what’s common is the colorful delineations is its pretensions and objects that remain the same. Specialized education has been defined as that phase of education which seeks to help the

people, scholars and the crowd acquire specific mechanical or manipulative chops needed in artificial trades or applied wisdom.

The public policy on education( 2004), stated the pretensions and objects of vocational and specialized education as follows

1) to give trained force in applied wisdom, technology and commerce particular atsub-professional grades.

2) to give specialized knowledge and vocational skill necessary for husbandry, diligence, marketable and profitable development.

3) to give training and impact the necessary chops leading to the product for craft- man, technicians and other professed labor force who’ll be enterprising and tone- reliant.

4) enable our youthful men and women to have intelligent understanding of the adding complexity of technology.

5) to give an preface to professional studies in engineering and other technologies.

Yole( 1986) reported that occupational areas within which vocational and specialized educational education subjects fall largely into are Agriculture, Home economics, Business and mechanics, capacity, fighting, trades etc. still, Agriculture and carpentry remain indecorous choices because they don’t attract important interest amongst the scholars. Anyakoha( 2000) emphasized that Home economics is a unique and dynamic field of study. Its central theme is the enhancement of lives of individualities, field of study1 that draws knowledge from numerous disciplines including wisdom and humanities in order to fulfill its objects. Bing a vocational subject that focuses on the weal of individualities, families and societies, Home economics contributes meaningfully to the results of the problems of the society similar as severance, poverty, malnutrition( Olcitan 2000).

Osuala( 1992) also stressed that Home economics as a vocational subject is needed to equip the learner with the knowledge of skill and station necessary for threw effective operation of the home, it requires chops, wisdom, fidelity, care, intelligence, unusual tolerance and veritably strong power of observation and imagination. thus, a pupil that has these rates should study vocational/ specialized subjects especially Home economics rather the reverse is the case. Federal Government wants vocational/ specialized education to enthrall a prominent position in our secondary seminaries, Nigerian seminaries pay little or no attention to vocational/ specialized subjects. preceptors and scholars feel not to understand what it’s each about and accordingly, develop some disdain and aversion for the subjects. As similar of vocational/ specialized subjects remain unhealthy. numerous of the occupations and trades are regarded as ignoble and unsuitable. An average Nigerian parents doesn’t want his son to earn a living as a full time planter, a watch- tinkerer, a plumber, a house painter, for numerous Nigerians, these jobs are

for the poor and depressed. Padunny( 1994) stressed that generally the advanced the occupational status of the scholars parents, the positive their station towards wisdom. This is to say that advanced occupational parents would want their child to be croakers , engineeringetc. without considering if the child would actually read wisdom subject to achieve that. The influence of parents in the development of scholars interest in vocational/ specialized subjects can not be over emphasized this is because parent feel to have important influence on children’s choice of educational career. The socio- profitable status of parent of a child determines the type of career one choose to do, some parents have poisoned and rigid studies regarding the occupational choices of a child/ children. Parents forgot that every type of work, once it’s salutary to the individual and society, is good and noble.( Nwankwo 1996). The result of this is a quasi advised attempt to frustrate the good intention of the civil and state government about vocation/ specialized education. The quality sign of implicit success in scholars vocational hobbies bear the identification of the scholars interest, aptitudes, capacities, values and judgments, if these will be discovered, it requires a guidance counselor who’ll give the applicable occupational information to the pupil with proper exposition to colorful openings available in the would of work. It isn’t surprising that scholars aren’t interested in vocational/ specialized subjects. Osuala( 1992) editorialized that, at the heart of our society and profitable problem is a public station that implies that vocational/ specialized subjects are designed for notoriety additional’s children and is meant primarily for the children of the poor. This same station is participated by scholars. therefore, it makes the scholars warrant interest in the study of vocational subjects particularly Home economics.
