INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

One of the largest and fastest expanding segments of the global tourism industry is cultural tourism. More and more, tourism promotions use the arts and creative industries to boost destinations’ appeal and competitiveness. In order to gain competitive advantages in an increasingly cutthroat market and to foster local distinctiveness in the face of globalization, many places are now actively developing their tangible and intangible cultural assets.

The impact of the tourism industry on cultural upliftment explores the evolving bond between tourism and culture and how the two have come to jointly power destination competitiveness and appeal. according to the case study. Olumo rock in Abeokuta serves as an example of the various ways that policy interventions, regional attractiveness, and culture interact.

This research demonstrates how a strong link between the tourism industry and cultural upliftment can be avoided in order to help places increase their attractiveness to tourists and their competitiveness as places to live, work, and invest.

Academic, national, and local policymakers, practitioners, and anyone working in the tourism industry who wants to understand how the industry can contribute to cultural upliftment should read this project.

1.2 THE SUDY’S STATEMENT

It is widely believed that technological advancements are slowly erasing our cultural heritage. In order to better understand how the tourism sector can contribute to cultural upliftment within the context of the relationship between the sector and

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

Examining the value of tourism to human existence, the connection between culture and the tourism sector, and how tourism can advance culture are the main goals of this study.

To help further narrow the researcher’s focus on the tourism sector as a pathway to cultural upliftment, the following questions were proposed.

i. What does the tourism industry entail?

ii. What do culture and cultural upliftment mean?

iii. What connection can be drawn between tourism and culture?

iv. How can we transform the tourism sector into a vital tool for advancing culture?

1.5 HYPOTHESES FOR RESEARCH

The researcher proposed the following hypothetical statements, drawing inspiration from the aforementioned research questions.

i. Tourism and culture are growing more and more

being used to promote locations and increase their appeal and competitiveness.

ii. The management of all resources is envisioned as being influenced by tourism in order to meet economic, social, and aesthetic needs while preserving cultural integrity, crucial ecological processes, and biological diversity.

iii. The tourism industry creates jobs for those working in it and serves as a platform for showcasing and exporting local cultures to a global audience.

1.6 THE STUDY’S SCOPE

The focus of this research is the Olumo rock, a popular tourist attraction in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
