Marriage is contracted to give a socially approved sexual and profitable union, as a way of establishing a family of gravidity, fellowship, collective backing, peace and social cohesion and also to enhance social status of the couple among others( stole f 2003). marriage sustainability entails the sum of the conditioning married couples do to insure that the marriage don’t go into reduction nor go sour to the point of breaking the union( TortyV. 2019)

The covid- 19 epidemic brought changes in social geste in the first three months after COVID- 19 surfaced Wuhan City, Hubei Province. And it was eventually declared as a global epidemic by the World Health Organization( WHO) on March 2020( WHO 2020). substantiation indicates that COVID- 19 transmitted through respiratory driblets via contact routes similar as the mouth, nose, and conjunctiva or eyes( UNICEF 2020). still it was necessary for countries to effect total lockdown of nearly every type of gathering place, stay- at- home measures introduced to combat the spread of the contagion, which forced numerous families and couples to live in much near and continual contact than typically endured. This affected grown-ups living alone, whether those who decided noway to marry or married and separated or disassociated; and those who are considered “ seniors ” and are living alone because of the loss of a partner( RichardS. 2020). while utmost marriages suffer due to profitable difficulty, others due to incapability of one partner to give for the family continuously lead to troubling, misreading and at extreme violence among couples which stained the marriage relationship and further to their children if any.

Statement Of The Problem

The COVID- 19 epidemic redounded in individualities and groups modifying their conduct and responses. In Offa original government Kwara State Nigeria, the most common family structures are the single- parent family( particularly single- mama families), followed by step families and grandparent- led families. The impact of COVID- 19 on these families and their social relations is like the two sides of a coin, both positive andnegative.A positive impact has been an increase in social relations within the family, with parents spending further time with their children and partner due to the stay- at- home guidelines. On the other hand, negative impact on family structures and marriage relations have led to domestic violence, dismembering former family structures with a ripple effect on communities. In some single parent families, cases of single maters having lawless sexual relationship with men in a shot to get liitle fund to take care of themselves, and among wedded couples, the fiscal rigors frequently lead to couple fights, discourteousness to the man as the family head, hunger among children and multitudinous controversies in the community. This is also true among stepchildren in step families. Owing to propinquity, some step siblings have been caught in the act of incestuous connections and occasionally stepfathers being inaptly indicted. An increase in expenditure as a result of increase in price of goods while family inflows reduce is sorrowfully felt. utmost families manage limited coffers by skipping some refections. Another negative impact of the COVID- 19 epidemic is on family members ’ social relations, where some members complained about others ’ shiftlessness and television dependence . In polygamous families where women aren’t staying in same community, misters can not travel due to government movement restrictions, which has led to emotional and cerebral stress to other women . Although misters might try to keep in touch by calling via mobile phones, utmostco-wives aren’t happy about the situation. still it’s against this background that this exploration is set to examine the effect of covid- 19 on marriage sustainability.

Ideal Of The Study

This study is aimed at showing an empirical analysis of he effect of covid- 19 and marriage sustainability. Specifically it’s meant

1. To examine the impact of covid- 19 on family structure

2. To determine ways which covid- 19 affected marriage and family

3. To probe the rate at which covid- 19 affected marriage sustainability

Significance Of The Study

This study in general will contribute to the body of knowledge. Specifically it’ll equip families and couples on conditioning to engage in in order to strengthen family ties especially in epidemic situations in order to live happily and sustain their marriages. More so it’ll enable marriage counselors on developing strategies for happy family life and marriage sustainability. It’ll also prop the unattached on the need for high preparedness before entering into any form of marriage relationship and family life accordingly.

This study is meant to examine the effect of covid- 19 on marriage sustainability using named families in Offa Local Government Kwara State as a case study.
